I don´t understand why recycling isn´t practised much more hereabout. After all, you can make money that way. E. g. I know of a woman who collects aluminium cans to help fund her animal welfare charity in Pervolia. Where I´m from (Würzburg, Germany) there is a whole power station fuelled with rubbish which is burnt therein.

I do understand a little bit better the mindset of fly tipping rubbish here..
We suffer from people fly tipping garden rubbish on our cul de sac lane... But since I have made enquiries about where to take Garden Rubbish, it seems I have a 25 to 30 minute drive to get to a green tipping area. And neither of the 'nearest' ones are on our usual route out to anywhere .

Not just in Würzburg: there are nearly 500 Waste-to-Energy plants in Europe and 1000 world-wide. Even in the 'third-world', there are many but Cyprus has resolutely refused the idea, despite EU subsidies available.
I published a 39-page proposal for studying a project with 2 WtE plants, one emphasising the possibility of providing both heat and electricity to the Nicosia General Hospital and the industrial plants in Latsia. This was looked at by both government and parliament with no result, despite the EU funding most of it. It is on a 1.7 MB pdf file that I unfortunately cannot copy here, dated October 2009. There are also three chapters on the subject of WtE in my book (see signature)

The trick is to incorporate it into your routine. So if we are going to Polis for a swim, we will take some the hedge trimmings to the Green Point on the way. That sort of thing.trevnhil wrote: ↑Thu May 24, 2018 10:40 am I do understand a little bit better the mindset of fly tipping rubbish here..

Of course one could also invest in his own garden waste shredding machine and use the leftovers to turn it into humus, which is nearly none existing in the Cypriot soils...

It isn't just Cypriots fly tipping, not by a long chalk.
And some Cypriots do recycle. Those Green Points don't fill up on their own. I've seen all sorts tooing and froing from them, not just UK expats.
Admitedly, a lot of times I will be the only customer, but I tend to go at off-peak times, if there is such a thing.

Were there any reasons given? I´m struggling to understand why they don´t do something which is so obviously beneficial and makes financial sense.Devil wrote: ↑Thu May 24, 2018 11:29 amthere are nearly 500 Waste-to-Energy plants in Europe and 1000 world-wide. I'm still struggling to understand why they would not do it or even do it now. Possibly 2009 was into the financial idiocies of the then government. Possibly also because the proposal was not thought up by Cypriot 'experts'. Possibly, the one 'Green' MP was too busy claiming the all the planes overflying Cyprus were depositing chemtrails on the land and that a receiving station's antennae were causing cancer around Akrotiri.
