Greek Easter

Post by PaphosAL »

Greek Easter, as I understand it, runs on a three year cycle compared with UK.

Year 1: Same weekend (like 2017)
Year 2: Greece and Cyprus one week later (like this year, 2018)
Year 3: Greece and Cyptus FIVE weeks later than UK (as per next year, 2019)

..and then the three year cycle begins over again. In the Eastern Orthodox church, it's all to do with a New Moon sighting over Jerusalem, unlike in UK.

Dom- please feel free to merge this post into the other thread on the same topic, as I'm boogered if I can find it right now...

Cheers- AL ;)

I posted this on another thread but it was rather off topic, with me doing a bit of moaning after witnessing some rude behaviour whilst in Lidl. In a better mood today. Lovely weather and the warmest Easter holiday we have witessed when Easter has been early. Last Easter we were still using our gas fire and the pool was a bit too cold to swim in.

In Western Europe, Easter Sunday is always on the first Sunday, after the first full moon after the first day of spring. Just googled how the date for the Orthodox Easter is worked out.

Easter in UK 2019 is 21st April. Easter in Cyprus 2019 is 28th April. I prefer when they are farther apart as when they are as close as this holidays are more expensive due to UK school holidays.
