Skimmers on Swimming Pools Query

Can some of the experts out there advise me whether the valves to the skimmers regulating flow into the pump should ever be closed to 50%. We have just had to replace the bearings on our pump and I was wondering if the fact that the pump might be under a too high load due to this half closure.
