Taxi drivers threaten to close Larnaca airport in Thursday stoppage

Post by memory man »

Taxi drivers at Larnaca airport announced on Wednesday morning they would go on an indefinite strike at 8am on Thursday and threatened to close off the roads to the airport.

The taxi drivers are protesting against new licences which are being given to shuttle buses for the routes to and from Ayia Napa and Protaras by the transport ministry. Shuttles currently operate to Larnaca and Paphos airports to and from Nicosia and also from Larnaca airport to Paphos airport.

According to head of the drivers’ association Omiros Fanis the extra licences mean that these buses will be operating throughout summer and will eat into their livelihood.

“This measure will totally weaken the taxi drivers at Larnaca airport, because with the installation of the shuttle buses, our work, which is mainly in the summer, will shrink a lot, thus endangering our profession and our own survival. Despite the fact that we have strongly protested to the appropriate ministries about the shuttle buses, nobody is paying any attention to us,” Fanis said.

Taxi drivers are desperate and it has not been ruled out that they will close the roads to the airport during their work stoppage, he added.

I would love to see Uber operating here, but it was introduced in Turkey, and I would imagine the same would happen here.

About 5 years ago, I left my outlaws in the taverna in Mandria, as they had a flight a few hours later. They called a taxi from the taverna and paid €60 to the airport. 5 minutes. Were threatened when they complained.

we were in Turkey last year, got a Taxi from the port in Instanbul, to take us to the Grand Bazaar, we asked him the fare first, charged us 20e... told us to look for him when we finished in the Taxi waiting area, when we finished there he was, jumped in the cab, and he took us back, I pulled out 20e and he said no, it is now 40e as there was more traffic, when we tried to argue ...he then turned from a smiling friendly chap, into a not so nice chap, moral of the story, always agree fare before getting into a taxi.

Two years ago we traveled from Sofia (Bulgaria) to a village called Lyublen a distance of 318km and the journey took over 4 hrs.
The cost was €85... I gave the driver €100. And don't forget the driver had the return journey as well.
The car was a modern Estate car..
As Has been known for years here.. Mostly taxi's are a rip off..
