Even when I prefer orchids....(pics)

Post by cyprusmax47 »

I thought I come up with some pics of Cyprus spring flowers after Dominic's recent comment that he prefers anemones to orchids. Well, there is a kind of tourism for botanists coming just for the orchids to Cyprus as there are many endemic kinds, mainly in the North of Cyprus (Pentaktylos area)

To start with, this is right on the road leading towards Nata from Episkopi.

Near a old church (where else) are growing hundreds of these "Star of Bethlehem"

a group of anemones

it is not a rose

close up, it is another anemone

wild garlic in huge numbers

and this little flower was hiding in the shade

not hiding this one right on the main road

a mix of everything, white, blue, yellow...

this one looks similar to an anemone, but it is not one

just a weed

beautiful poppy

and finally a field of camomile flowers

Lovely photos Max, thank you so much for sharing. I especially like the purple and pink flower 'hiding in the shade' together with bug and also the great shot of the poppy. My favourite flowers are orchids but I think some of the 'weeds' have pretty flowers. :D

What fantastic photos. This time of the year in Cyprus is beautiful with all the wild spring flowers.
Love the Mimosa but it is a pain for swimming pools!

I am pleased you like the pics. I prefer showing people the beauty of Cyprus this time a year rather than the ongoing stories about smelly seaweed every day. Of course you cannot see nice flowers along the beaches but already there are plenty just 100 m inland.

By the way, the smell from seaweed comes up only if it is moved by diggers etc as underneath the fermenting process started. When I have lunch at my fish tavern in Timi every Saturday, right on the sea, there was never ever a nasty bad smell from the seaweed there....

Which reminds me, Max. It's been a while since we've seen one of your illustrated Saturday Fish Lunch from Timi beach blogs here on PL...

Long overdue, especially now that you have cracked the focussing on your fairly new camera!

The gastronomic juices are already churning in anticipation...

Sorry Max. I will not mention or post about smelly seaweed ever again. There are flowers along the coast and on the land near Penelope's church and on the path to Lighthouse Beach and I am sure I have taken pictures of them and posted on here. The only reason I have posted about seaweed is it affects the tourists staying at the hotels and they think the smell is sewerage. This year is worse than any other I can remember. Also, I would disagree with you about the smell only being released when it is being dug up. The smell on the beach next to Penelope's Church was awful even before the diggers turned up.

And one of the reasons I do not walk inland here is the fear, and it is a real fear, of being chased by dogs, as happened the first time I went out on my bike to Nata, and two dogs jumped out of a pick up and chased me. Also, for the same reason, Rachel will not run around our village as she was chased by a dog and prefers to go to the coastal path.

That's good! This allows me to add one of my favourite orchid pics from Neo Chorio area.

One flower of this orchid shows a devils mask upside down - I love it....
