Use this form and take it to the Citizens Service Centre (we used the one in the Post Office near the General Hospital)

We have EHIC Cards but we had to apply for them in UK not Cyprus [ though we used to have Cypriot ones ].

I notice from the Form suggested that you would require a Medical Card so you have to be in possession of one.

EHIC card only entitles you to receive the equivalent treatment you get in Cyprus, if you have to pay for Medical treatment in Cyprus then you will probably have to pay for it in the Country you are visiting.

I can't actually remember why we stopped having the Cyprus EHIC and had to get a UK one, we are registered for Treatment and have Medical cards.

If you get free Cypriot Health care you will be eligible for the Cypriot EHIC card.

Louise do you not have to get the card from the country you reside in?

No, I have the normal medical card for Cyprus and the Dutch EHIC card for when I travel in Europe. I can use that EHIC card also in The Netherlands but not in Cyprus.

Thank you Louise for the reply, I always thought the card was for travel in Europe, and not in the country of issue?

Lincoln is correct. If anyone is resident here then and below pensionable age, one should ether be working here and paying social insurance in return after a qualifying period you are eligible for free state health care. Otherwise you are required to have private medical insurance. As I understand it, an EHIC card is issued by the country in which your passpirt is issued. It is. Not meant to be used for anything other than emergency or basic health care ie seeing a GP,
Once the Brexit takes effect we are likely to not be eligble to have or use an EHIC card.

You do not automatically get free hospital treatment,if your working and paying social security, there are factors like how much pay you get.

That's incorrect, I have a UK Passport & a Cyprus issued EHIC! I cannot claim a UK EHIC as I have no UK address anymore.

Also, speculation about what will happen after Brexit is just that, speculation! There is every chance that EHIC criteria will not alter, ie UK nationals will still be able to use an EHIC while travelling in the EU, EEA & Switzerland & EU nationals etc. while travelling in the UK!

You might want to check Lincoln but normally an EHIC is only valid for up to 5 years from issue date!

The limit is € 15400 / year (or at least that was the limit in 2013). See https://www.moh.gov.cy/MOH/MOH.nsf/page ... enDocument

Although the EHIC is an EU benefit the EU allows member countries to issue them which means that each country applies its own rules and regulations.

The UK will issue an EHIC to all British people (and possibly others but I'm not sure about that) who are normally resident in the UK.

The UK will issue an EHIC to British people who are normally resident in another EU country who receive a British state pension.

The UK used to (not sure if still does) issue an EHIC to those who are normally resident in another EU country but who are below UK state pension age but the EHIC itself is time limited, in my case it was two years.

Cyprus used to issue the EHIC for all residents but this was stopped some time ago in line with EU rules. Don't know who is eligible now beyond Cyprus citizens.

Anyone who has a Cyprus Medical Card is entitled to a Cyprus issued EHIC, my wife & I have both & we are not pension age yet either!

You might want to re read my comments-"When we renewed" :D

I did but as you stated above you renewed your EHIC when in the UK and then moved to Cyprus in 2004 ........ that to me means an out of date EHIC which is why I suggested you check!

We have no address in the UK. We live in Cyprus at our permanent Cypriot home, and have done for over 10 years.. I renewed our EHIC cards about 2 years ago by phoning the offices in Newcastle.. The cards were sent to our Cypriot PO Box address. They expire in 2020..

As a Dependant of a UK State Pensioner who is resident in Cyprus I am named on the Cypriot Medical Card. In conjunction with this I am issued an EHIC from the UK for the corresponding amount of time. I go the the CSC to renew the Cyprus Medical Card and then renew the EHIC on-line every five years. If my husband dies, then I am no longer entitled to either Card until I receive my State Pension or get a job.

No, Shane, my EHIC card had to be renewed by the UK, even when I didn’t have a UK address. It seems as if the regulations regarding which country issues an EHIC to non resident (in the UK) British nationals must be subject to change from time to time. As with all these forms it is advisable to check the current state of play with whoever is the relevant authority. Which I always do,
As yet the British Government is still negotiating the terms of the Brexit with the EU authorities, so what will happen after the Brexit will no doubt become clear in due course.
