Dumped dogs

Post by darrow »

Walking our dogs this morning and saw another newly dumped dog running in the fields. Couldn't get near it but although slender, it is not skinny, which, having not seen it before makes me think it is newly dumped! When will they take responsibility for the animals they don't want? It looks like a fairly young hunting dog, very much like one of ours, who was also dumped in the local fields. Tala monastery has had some pups left at their premises too. Is it the end of the hunting season? That might explain some of it!

I have seen a couple of what look like hunting dogs dead at the side off the road this morning.. It would seem to be Dumping season now.. By the way, there was sounded like gunfire around our area this morning, despite the hunting season being finished now ..

Darrow hello, living in the same area there are in fact three wandering dogs, all large and skinny no doubt looking for a new home, they are friendly enough two with collars, unfortunately just another case of animal mistreatment we all see so often on Cyprus. And yes it does make your blood boil!

Poor things, its so sad. It's sickening, nothing will change any time soon in Cyprus as regards animal welfare.

Yes, Firefly is right, the dumping of hunting dogs happens every year around this time. Its one of the reasons why I hate the way that ‘hunting’ is carried out here.
I wish that hunting with dogs here could be banned. The poor animals seldom seem to receive any training, and get taken out hunting without knowing what to do or how to behave. If they don’t perform up to their owners satisfaction they get dumped, poisoned or shot. Unlike gun dogs in the UK who are greatly valued by their owners, very well trained and well treated and kept. Training of a future gun dog begins at about 6mths with general puppy training. After that, the training that a gun dog receives is specialised with obedience to certain commands being paramount. By the time they go out shooting they are fit, they understand how to walk to heel, sit still on command and to retrieve (shot) game on command. At the end of the day, they go home inside their owners car, and are then cleaned off, well fed and have comfortable, warm sleeping quarters. How does that compare with the sort of life that the average hunting dog has here?

Dee morning.

You are correct I posted the very same message sixteen years ago on MSN CL Forum, nothing indeed does change and my guess is it will never change sadly.

Allesley

I didn't think CL was alive then, wasn't it Cyprus Property owners and Buyers with Lord Briano the main man?

Morning all.and what lovely weather, summer on the way again.

Remeber CyprusLiving was originally an MSM Group forum site, I started in 2002 I was here over 16 years ago Alan and I did post the very same message, the point is nothing has changed.

Dominic, That domain name was formed only after MSN stopped the Groups forums, perhaps you forgot this? At that time we went with a private server as many did. Most of those members followed us to our new private server, it was fairly traumatic at the time, but many of those members are still here on PL and good for them.

Lincoln is your memory fading, it has been nearly 17 years, and many previous years staying at my daughter home on holidays, so add another ten years onto that.

Alan you are right and wrong, MSN Cyprus Buyers and owners forum were indeed going then (Graham Cockroft and Brian all unfortunately departed now) but soon folded, it was just a selling forum for local property we felt, so not for me, I started CL MSN site that soon had over seven thousand members, they were the boom days I doubt will be repeated again. So many ex-pats coming here to live, so many questions that were answered.

Alan, I certainly do not mind you or any other members using my name, it is Jim as you know. ;) nothing to hide!

So long live Paphos Life, but do not forget the past.
Jim.

Yes, I remember all the reincarnations of Jim’s various forums. Owners and Buyers must have been harder to control as far as contents of some postings went. There were also some colourful characters, I remember Lord Briano as he used to call himself. There was more to him than met the eye as some expats had cause to find out. Also Graham Cockcroft...
But it could be interesting to read the unexpurgated versions of some posts. Then there was Cyprus Living which is now part of Paphos expat folklore.. many members of that too.
But what I enjoyed most were the early gatherings when Jim and some of us contributers to Jim’s forum about 20-30 of us used to meet in one of the local taverns monthly for a shared meze! Wine and much camaradarie!

Yes, do you remember Semins? a Cyprus club owner now removed from Cyprus, we had some steamy posting from him, he was good friends of those now deceased members Brian and Graham.

Glad I could help at that time Poppy..

I do miss those nights out Dee, although not at all easy to organise. The last night out was arranged by Ann who now lives in NZ she managed to get 150 of us for the last CL event, not sure it would be easy to get a night like that again we even had a four-piece rock band.
If Dominic ever decides a PL night out, please put my name down, be nice to meet old and new friends again..

I have cycled around the area where this poor lady was killed and have been worried about being attacked by dogs. In my quest to find a more coastal path to Paphos I cycled down one lane and was barked at by two very fierce looking Alsatians who were running round a large enclosure parallel to the road.
Near Anarita I was chased by two smaller hunting dogs who jumped out of the back of a stationary pickup truck when they saw me. The owner and his mate thought it was funny and did not call off the dogs.

Brian Overy. Wish we had never met the bloke. Feel sorry for all those people who were caught up in the buy and then let scheme. At least we have enjoyed our house for the last thirteen years but they ended up with nothing.

Did not realise that the cl event that New Zealand Drummer organised was the last one. It was a really good do, good food and entertainment.

Hi Jim, yes I remember postings by Semins, but never met him. Probably just as well. Him, Brian And Graham made an unsavoury threesome really. Fortunately, though we met Brian and his wife we never got involved with any of his ‘business enterprises” and scams connected with real eatate. Though I knew someone who was, the whole thing has turned out disasterously, no chance of them getting title deeds as the developer recommended by Briano later went bankrupt...

Back to Dog Dumping.. The rescue dog we have recently taken on was found wandering on the motorway. Dumped ????? no on knows.. Sadly at the time inquiries did not turn up the owner.
We have him now and he is chipped etc and he has a great character.. Almost 100% as good as gold..

Well done, Trev. He was a very lucky dog. It won’t be the first time that a dog is dumped on the motorway. Often the poor confused animal is left running along the road until someone hits it with a vehicle.

Well done Trev, I must say our rescue dog has been more than loved for ten years, we cannot imagine life without her, but this will be my last dog as age is catching up with us, and I would not like to burden anyone else with the care they do need,

Again good on you Trev. :)
