Problems finding Router Password

Post by PW in Polemi »

I need help, please.
I need to know the password for my house router in order to set up a new device, but the one Dave had written down is not being accepted. :(
Is there any way to locate the router password on my laptop which runs Pale Moon, or on Dave's laptop which runs Firefox?
Can anybody help me? And please bear in mind that I am not exactly technologically enabled

What are you actually trying to do, and what password do you mean?

There are two password:

The wireless password
The router password

I imagine you want the wireless password. Unfortunately these days, the password is normally protected by asterixes so that you cannot read them. However, if you have a wireless printer, you may be able to print a network configuration page and see it displayed there.

If you want the router password, the default is on the base of the router. If neither that nor the written down password work, you will need to reset the router. Before you do that though, you need to know what is connected to it. I don't want you to reset anything if it is going to break an internet link for a security system. So router reset is a last resort.

I've bought a tablet and need to connect it to t'internet, but don't seem able to. It won't accept whatever I input as the password to access the house wi-fi system.

I don't have a wireless printer - told you, I'm not technologically enabled
The security system is not on this router. If I reset the router, won't it go back to whatever the password was when it was installed? If so, how do I know what that was?

Feeling extremely stupid, here.

You're looking to connect your new tablet to your home internet via WiFi, is that correct?

If so, the Router name / Username and Password you need to type into your new tablet should be on a label attached underneath your home internet connection router box. Remember, it's all case sensitive so you have to change from lower to uppercase as it's written.

Unless you changed it when you connected it at home!
In which case, I think you would have to see if you can reset it completely - not something I've ever done so hopefully someone else can help you.

Most routers have a thing called WPS, whereby you push a button on the back of it and then try and connect. What is the make and model of your router?

Incidently, what you are looking for is the wireless or SSID password. The router password is something else.

What I am looking for is the wi-fi password, the first thing most people ask for when they come to stay!
My ISP has provided the password he knew, which is different to the one Dave wrote down - and neither work, in any of the possible variations (upper case/lower case).
I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do a re-set, start again with a new password. And hope I don't just lock myself out completely, never to be heard from again
What router is it? Well, it's white and attached to the wall  and has TP Link printed across it. As for the model,
I'll try a re-set - but in daylight when I can see what I am doing, so if I never post again, you know I've done something REALLY REALLY stupid and disconnected the lot.

Turn the sound down on your PC and try watching this first.

Kay
Do you use any Apple products such as iPad or iPhone which you have previously connected to your home WIFI with?
If so I assume you would of used the default Safari browser.
To find the password of any site you use its then pretty easy.
Go to the Settings page
Scroll down the list on the left of the page and highlight Safari
look to the right and tap passwords
enter your normal unlock passcode
you will then see a run list of all the passwords you have used to connect to any IP address.
Tap on one of the numbers and it will reveal the username and password associated with it.
For example
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 are the likely default Ip for a TP Link brand device.
If you don't use an Apple device then- sorry can't help.

Thanks for that, Dominic - but I'm one of the last remaining dinosaurs without a smart phone  I've got 2 Kindles and 2 laptops connected to the house wi-fi, but cannot see how to ascertain the password to access the house wi-fi.
Bromerzz, the only Apple device that is connected (when in range) to my house wi-fi is that of my cousin who lives in Kyrenia and is not due here again for several weeks :( I did email and ask, but apparently unless within range, my house wi-fi system does not even show up on their iPad.
I'll check out the router more thoroughly tomorrow in the daylight and see what buttons I can find to push. :D

The video shows you how to activate WPS on the router, which lets you connect without a password. Ignore the phone. See what they press on the router.

Thanks Dominic. I did spot the little black button and thought I might fiddle with it tomorrow ...

All of you being so helpful gave me the courage to try a few more things for myself, before touching the router itself - and hey presto, I’m on! I found it by clicking on the “connected” icon on the laptop taskbar and looking at every option available.

Thanks for all the metaphorical hand holding, much appreciated
Now I just have to work out how to write and send emails on this thing ... Where’s a spotty young geek when you need him?

Well, with no crApple stuff connected, that's gotta be a benefit!!!! ;)

Anyway, can you log in to your router?

On any web browser (best not to use Google Chrome), in the address bar, type in
192.168.1.1
then when asked to log in, the username will probably (hopefully) be admin and the password also admin

Then look along the tabs for settings and/or perhaps wifi

Maybe there will be a password option there and a tick box to show you it .... perhaps???

Kay
Your username and password will/might still show up in your friends iPad if they saved it whilst at your house.
It's just a matter of looking through the IP addresses on their device.
