Post by GreenArmy12 »

Hi All,

Looking to hire a car, possibly non red plate for a week in June, including a few days across in North Cyprus, anybody got any contacts or ideas?

Thanks in advance

You cant...some people hire cars out on the side illegally....good luck with that one, insurance wise

Never been to the North. But I've had the pleasure of many white plate cars and 4WDs from G&K over the years. Guess it's how well they know and trust you, perhaps?

Such motors must be insured for any driver, as there is no way they would risk letting you out on the public highway uninsured... And when you reach the TRNC border in such a motor, (not that I've ever had any desire to do so), you surely buy their insurance for the onward journey, no?

Thinking about it, I've been to Cyprus 34 times now, but never been to Nicosia. No desire to do so, either! About as much appeal as driving to London, 30 miles south of me, yuk...

AL ;)

Nicosia is a great place to visit, as is London. All depends on where you go.

Rental company's are only licenced to rent out how ever many red plates they have, renting out non licenced red plates is illegal, it dosnt matter if the car is insured for any driver, it wont be insured for rental, no problem until theres an accident and insurance company's are involved.......

Agreed, I love spending time in Nicosia within the walls, and a walk across to the north for something different, only half an hour from us, but somehow the wife always finds an excuse to pop into Ikea, which I hate.

Do they not have a 'Jumbo' you try for a change ;-)

I too like the old Nicosia on either side of the line..

One time we were renting we managed to lose the front number plate. We couldn't understand why people were letting us out of side roads all of a sudden. :)

Yes one way round..What I cant understand is,why my wife bothers buying stuff from there.. mainly cheap tacky stuff...takes it home puts it in the kitchen cabinets, then chucks it out a few months later when she has a clear out. :?

Very true, Dominic. Shame on you Al!!

We are going to Nicosia for a couple of days. Look around, shopping, etc. Gives you a different outlook.

Re hire cars. Agree with everyone else. Do not take a hire car over the "border". Best to hire a car after crossing.

Thanks for the responses, and the tour guide information :-) Pretty much as expected, reason for enquiry is our car has only 4 seatbelts, and with visitors in June need to get 5 over to the north. guess a private loan may be the answer, if I can find such a thing.

The problem with a private loan is that I doubt their insurance will cover the North of the island. You can, and will be expected to, take out insurance as you cross the line... But I believe it is only 3rd party, and will not cover the vehicle being collected if you have a breakdown..
Petsas, may well still allow their cars to go to the North.

Our HRV had that problem.
I took it to Droushiotis (on the Polis Rd) and they fitted another (middle lap belt)

Job done! :D
