Riccos Beach
Went to Riccos this morning and they were demolishing all the outside area.
Looks like the place is having a complete face lift, which will probably destroy all of its character.

Re: Riccos Beach
Not the first time this has been reported as happening, but previously Ricos seemed to bounce back as before! But I think that I read in the local paper some months ago that a face lift is scheduled for the whole of this beach to ‘up grade it’. I think it said something about Ricos place being rebuilt with modern hygienic facilities and handed back to him to run.
Did anyone else see this?

Re: Riccos Beach
Yes Dee, I remember seeing this article, and I agree the place needs modern hygenic facilities, but I can't help thinking that the whole character of the place will be destroyed.
Re: Riccos Beach
Some photos of work in progress would be great, please! Phil? Jim?
Though I'll try and get down there myself to take a look (and photos) in 17 days time...
The old wooden mezzanine decking that provided nice shade underneath, but was out of bounds for donkeys years (due to being unsafe to walk on) will doubtless be one of the first things to go, I guess. Hope it's replaced with something more modern, but same idea..

Re: Riccos Beach
Al,
I think that time will tell what the new ‘Riccos’ will look like!
But from what I have noticed around the new look ‘old town’ their idea of resoration or building anything new, the modern concrete and glass frontage, probably painted white is the norm. The Paphos Mayor has his own ideas and seems to prefer individual tables with umbrellas outside, instead of the old awnings. But thinking about it, isn’t Riccos in Gereskipou?
Hope that maybe this may be an exception but I won’t hold my breath..

Re: Riccos Beach
Ricco's cafe on Yerouskipou beach this morning.
It looks like from the cafe that it is either being rebuilt or pulled down, all the covered area is being removed, the beach from the cafe to the airport end is supposed to be developed, but so far little signs of this just yet. A better cafe now gone unfortunately was Marios's Seaside cafe & restaurant, it was clean and tidy with good food right on the beach, now replaced by a holiday type complex, great shame.
Alan. Give Riccos a miss this time, that part of the beach is in a terrible state.
Lovely and warm on this beach today! summer is on the way!
The old boys sat in the sun today as they had no choice, Tavali still being played.

Agree with you about the Seashine cafe, Jim.
I could never understand why it closed down.

Re: Riccos Beach
Was going to post some pictures of Ricco's Beach but Jim got in first. Did my second walk since arriving today, from Riccos to the harbour, finishing with a lovely coffee at Ma Bianca.
Lots of work going on at most of the hotels. A few of them, including the Aqua Mare have had floors added and a pitched roof. The hotel which has stood half built since the recession is being finished.
Just one section of the path is being done, near the Muncipal Beach.

Re: Riccos Beach
We ourselves prefer the old style things like Riccos. Recalls the feeling from many phantastic holidays in the 80s on small Greek islands.
Nothing perfect, nothing prim, a lot of improvisation and self made, populated with all types
Each beach cafe with its own character, just like the owners.
Loved it. Not many left....
Would be nice to have just one in paphos. There are enough of the stylish ones for everybody who likes them.

Re: Riccos Beach
Could not agree more, die6! One of my fondest memories of Riccos Beach was one hot June afternoon when I had a hire car due to be dropped off at PFO for George @ easyrentacar to collect.
Checked out of hotel at noon, but not due at PFO for check in until 4pm. Spent a glorious 2 hours at Riccos, including a swim in the Med, a first for me! Beach was packed that day...
Long may Riccos Beach last, including all the lovely wildlife that Andreas takes so much loving care of! I wonder what is happening to his menagerie during the revamp?

Re: Riccos Beach
We often stop at Ricco's for a drink when walking along the coast. About a year ago I felt something brushing against my legs, and then settled down against my feet, and just assumed it was a cat. Mrs QuarterPint then started scrabbling for her camera and gesticulating towards whatever it was under the table, so I took a quick look. It was a pig! Not being a pig expert I have no idea whether it was a miniature variety or a piglet of the regular sort.

That's the pig that used to follow Ricco everywhere, like a little dog. Until one day Ricco cut its throat and put it on the barbeque !!!

I can assure you that the little pig referred to was not dispatched but has gone up to a village to live a very happy life (I have seen photos and have been following it’s progress).

Riccos Beach closes today, it looks like they're pulling the whole place down in readiness for these new beach bars.

Re: Riccos Beach
Excellent news indeed. Cannot wait until it looks like a proper beach resort instead of a rufugee camp.
Re: Riccos Beach
There will be plenty of scrap metal to be recycled from the old outdoor loos!
I hope they maintain the patina of the old setting, though, (along with proper modern male / female toilets, changing rooms, showers, etc...). And that a large cold bottle of Keo or Carlsberg reverts to €2-50 !!!
