Exchange rates are always negotiable, also at banks, especially when dealing with larger sums. My wife got really good at haggling with bank staff (a trade she learned in the Middle Eastern souks) and saved us quite some dosh over the years.

I used to do I.T support on a dealing room in the city. One of the head economists there was a Mr Roger Bootle (this was the mid 90s). You would not believe how dull the pile of magazines he read on a daily basis were. This was, of course, before the rise of the internet. They had to content themselves with Bloomberg terminals and the like.
