Paphos municipalities and communities work together to improve area

Post by memory man »

Actions to upgrade and improve huge swathes of Paphos are being co-ordinated by local authorities, after they decided to take action to improve facilities and beautify town and village centres.

Mayor of Geroskipou, Michalis Pavlides told the Cyprus Mail that the municipality is working with the municipalities of Paphos and Peyia and twelve villages of the ‘lower’ Paphos district towards concerted efforts to speed up much needed infrastructure projects and improve the aesthetics of many areas.
“We are trying to cooperate with the municipalities and villages to take a number of actions which will improve things greatly,” he said.

These actions will include opening a tender to create plans to finish the ring road around the town which will eventually connect Paphos airport with Coral Bay.
“We will try to speed these plans along and give them to the government to get the funds as quickly as possible, if we leave it, it could easily be another twenty years before anything is done,” he said.
The remainder of the stretch of road to be completed in Geroskipou is about 2 km to the airport he said, noting that it is impossible to estimate the cost until plans are completed.
“Some people have told me that if we include a bridge the cost will be around 14 million euros, but we can’t really have an idea until the plans have been drawn up,” he said.

The mayor also said that authorities will form a team to remove illegal billboards and signs along roads and from the centre of villages and municipalities. He noted that squares would be painted and beautified and that a tender to replace old street lighting with LED lights would also be opened.

Pavlides said that the idea to create a new approach came after discussions with Paphos mayor, Phedonas Phedonos, on issues they are currently cooperating on, such as the creation of new breakwaters which will stretch from Geroskipou to ‘Ta Bania’ in Kato Paphos.
“We have also got a tender to create 120 new bus stops in Geroskipou and Paphos, we thought why not include the villages as well, so that we can all work together to improve things,” he said.

The first coordinated meeting took place at Paphos town hall on Tuesday evening and a second will take place next week, said Pavlides, as some officials were unable to attend.
The initiative includes the three municipalities of Paphos, Peyia and Geroskipou and twelve community councils including: Timi, Agia Marina, Konia, Chlorakas Emba, Acheleia, Kissonerga, Mesogi and others.
“We want to give a more unified image for the lower Paphos district, which is important” he said, including the execution of infrastructure and landscaping projects.
He said that the municipality of Polis Chrysochous has not been included due to its distance from the lower Paphos district areas.
In the first meeting, the proportionate allocation of the necessary costs was also discussed, as were ideas to reduce the costs of various necessary supplies, such as machinery, materials and lights, to save time and funds, as well as other common actions in green areas and park cleaning.
At the next meeting attendees will put forward further proposals for discussion.

I noticed the other day that they already hacked down many illegal billboards on the Coral Bay road between the Aspire School & the St Georges crossroads! I just hope that they come round & clear them all away!

Completion of the Ring Road would be good. Both near the airport and at the other end behind Lidl..
