UK mobile phones

Post by PaphosAL »

Dopey question, sorry. But you guys and gals flitting to and fro between UK and Cyprus, using your UK mobile out in Cyprus. What do your current roaming charges look like for the following, please?

Voice calls to UK
Received voice calls from UK
Text messages to UK

Many thanks- AL :)

AL, Roaming is a thing of the past in the EU. You pay nothing extra in an EU country. So enjoy no bills extra for a trip to Cyprus.

BUT, hurry up and do it before Brexit...... as its a very possible thing to dissapears....

We now enjoy the same tariff on our roaming in Cyprus as we do in the UK, so now no longer make calls to the UK on our Cyprus phone. Also no need to use whatsap or skype anymore for calling back to the UK, as our sim only contract with vodafone covers our calls and texts to the UK.
When in the UK we use our Cyprus PAYG mobile to call Cyprus, as this works out cheaper now, as again, free roaming.

Al, I am sure you would benefit from a move to Cyprus. I am already missing my daily walks along the front and my bike rides around Anarita, and we have only been back a fortnight. (due to being an executor) I read on a post that you had joined a gym as part of your copd rehab. I have been going to our local authority gym as part of my heart bypass rehab. Even though the temperature was 14c today here in North Wales it was windy, so yet another day without much exercise. I would certainly get far more exercise in Cyprus at this time of year.

Another option for you would be a long term stay in a hotel. On one of my bike rides in North Wales I met a couple who live in a motor home in the UK for the summer and then go abroad at the end of October for the winter. They usually go to Spain but had tried Malta once and I told them about Cyprus and the agapinor hotel in the old town.

Thanks Jim and John!

Reason I was asking about this is that here in UK, I'm on the Virgin Media Simply 8 PAYG mobile plan, which is 8p per minute voice, and 8p per text. When I go on my annual baccy raid to Belgium, France then Belgium notifies my mobile that calls cost 4p per minute, and texts are 1p!

Madness or what? Which is why I was wondering about using my locked UK Virgin mobile in Cyprus, rather than spending £15 for Virgin to unlock it beforehand, then another £15 to buy a Cyta So Easy mobile sim when out there?

Cheers- AL :?

Thanks Lloyd! But I could do with input from someone in UK using a UK mobile as to what message they receive on their phone as to charges upon arrival at PFO. Bograt perhaps?

When we arrive in Cyprus it tells us that we are roaming and we enjoy the same benefits using the phone in Cyprus as in the UK. It is the same message each time from vodaphone. We are now on a sim only contract, £10 a month for a ridiculous number of minutes, unlimited texts and 250 gb of data, which we never get near using. So on our bill, voice calls are part of our 300 minutes, texts are free and we never get close to using 250 gb of roaming data.

The only thing you would need to be careful of is if you went to the east, as you could pick up Turkcell and be charged for roaming.

I use a straightforward PAYG sim in my unlocked Cyta bought mobile back here in UK. No monthly bundle of texts, calls or data for me. I put £5 credit on it about every 8 - 10 weeks.

I mostly use my phone for texting and browsing the internet over free WiFi outside the house (home and overseas) as I only make the odd phone call.

My rate is also supposed to be 8p a minute but my provider takes a lesser cost if my call is under a minute in length. Vodafone took the full 12p no matter how short the call was when I got my first sim card with them upon first returning to UK from Cyprus. Been with our current provider now for over 12 months and I asked them to switch my automatic voicemail off last year when my Dad was in hospital so I didn't miss any calls.... It's still deactivated so no more charges for accessing messages because I couldn't reach the call inside 4 rings.

The rates are actually better when 'roaming' ....

With my UK contract phone (SIM only with Three) ..... In the UK, I get charged an 'international rare' if I call Cyprus, whereas when roaming in CY, it comes out of my 'inclusive minutes'
Likewise if I call any other EU country when roaming in CY
How crazy is that?
I've not tried it to call outside the EU.

Hi Al I have a virgin sim card and when I arrive at PFO I get a text message giving me the prices for text and calls. As others have said it is just the same as using your phone in the UK no hidden charges. But do be aware I was kicked in the teeth a few years ago after crossing into the north and had a large bill when I arrived back in the UK.

I just checked back in my phone but I've deleted the texts I received from my mobile provider when we went to Malta earlier this year :-(
