Sirens cause concern in Paphos
Air raid sirens sounded in Paphos on Wednesday morning, leaving residents and visitors concerned.
However, a spokesman for Paphos police assured they were sounding as part of maintenance checks to ensure they were in working order.
“They (Civil Defence) are trying to fix them and to check they are performing correctly, it’s nothing to worry about,” he told the Cyprus Mail.
Civil Defence announced that tests had been scheduled for some sirens located in the town and other areas of Paphos.
Siren tests will take place every day from Tuesday 14 November to Friday 17 November 2017, between 8am and 3pm.
A number of residents and visitors were left shaken and fearful that a disaster was occurring, when the wailing sounded across Paphos at around 10.45am.
“I didn’t know what to think,” said British holidaymaker Maureen Clayton, “it’s a scary sound. I’m glad to know that it’s a practice but it would have been good if our hotel had told us about it.”
Local authorities, including Chlorakas community council, didn’t seem to be aware of the test, as concerned residents telephoned in to find out the situation.
“You just never know these days,” said one elderly resident, “I hope I never have to hear that sound for real again,” he said.
Air raid sirens usually sound in the Republic of Cyprus to mark the 1974 coup and subsequent Turkish invasion of the island five days later.
Sirens sound across Cyprus at 5.30am on July 20th to mark the anniversary of the Turkish invasion, when an armada of 33 Turkish ships landed on the northern coast.
They also sound on July 15 at 8.20am, the time the military coup against president Makarios started in 1974.

I was down near Viofos traffic lights and they were really loud.. But I don't think they are testing them all at the same time.
