The Paphos dogs discovered by tourists last month being kept in ‘horror conditions’ are enjoying their liberation in a well-cared-for, clean and happy environment. They are receiving correct medical treatment and are safe, but the legal case continues in the background.
The animals had to be liberated because for too many years the government authorities, and others involved recently in animal welfare, have been failing these animals.
There have been the good few who have campaigned and lobbied to the ‘legal system’ for many years, including us. But the lack of implementation of any laws by the relevant authorities – who seem immune from prosecution themselves – still allows animals to die, or to be ‘passed onto a friend’, never checked or seen again. This is unacceptable!
We have shown that we will no longer tolerate such abuse. Everyone in Cyprus who genuinely cares about animal welfare has had enough. We are exhausted, drained and financially broke!!
As always, the abusers are using the police against the very people who have animal interests at heart, and we include a few in government vet services who sadly cannot do more than their managers allow them to do. This matter has to be addressed for changes to be possible.
The apparent owner of the dogs in this case forced the police to arrest a volunteer who ensured the dogs received urgent veterinary care, as they were days from death. She is presently on bail.
This should never have happened and it is shameful. The volunteer is receiving support and we will all work to get the charges dropped.
We thank wholeheartedly all the media who reported this case, along with qualified private authorities who sent in statements and health reports on these abused dogs to the police to ensure they would not be sent back to prisons of those cages.
A full report will be given by the wonderful and experienced carers who now have the dogs with the knowledge of the authorities. We thank them also from our hearts for helping the dogs of Cyprus.
