Man dies in the sea off Paphos

Post by memory man »

A 54-year-old Russian tourist died while swimming in the sea off the Venus hotel in Paphos, police said on Saturday.

His wife said he had entered the water at around 11am and 20 minutes later she saw him floating apparently unconscious.

The man was pulled out and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He had arrived in Cyprus with his wife a few days ago and decided to go for a swim in Paphos.

Reports said strong winds were blowing and the sea was rough at the time.

Another death. It's two or three most years at this beach. You would think the Venus beach Hotel would warn it's residents about the sea there, but no. This from their web site:

"If one of your reasons for coming to Paphos, Cyprus is for a Seaside holiday, then the Venus Beach Hotel is the place to visit. With its pure sand and crystal waters, this beach is open to the public and offers a variety of comforts including sun beds, parasols and beach towels for all hotel guests."

Disgraceful!

There are big signs along there warning you of danger, too.

Very sad, but no amount of red flags, signs etc will help if people ignore them.

A key point is that there is not a sign saying "don't swim", only signs on how to swim if you are caught in a rip current. This implies it is OK to swim if you know what you are doing. I know there are ropes and red flags, but a sign saying "don't swim" is surely something that should be there. Perhaps the hotel doesn't want it.

I certainly think the hotel is guilty of bigging something up that it shouldn't.

Tourist drowns in Paphos

OCTOBER 11TH, 2017

A 69-year-old tourist drowned off the Paphos municipal beach on Wednesday, despite attempts to revive her.

According to police, at 5:45pm, a tourist flagged down two traffic police officers who were patrolling the area, telling them a woman was in danger of drowning.

The officers swam in to rescue her and bring her to shore where they took her to Paphos general hospital.

Doctors tried but despite repeated attempts could not revive her.

The tourist had arrived in Paphos on October 2.
