Faded registration plates on car.

Post by Mike.1940 »

I have just had an Mot done on my car in my absence and the number plates are faded And need replacing. I understand that only the owner can do this and I will not be out until the 12th October. The Mot garage have passed the car and stated that if stopped by the police I could be fined and the garage would also be in trouble. My problem is my son is out on the 4th October and will be using the car before I arrive on the 12th.I still have a current Mot expiring on the 12th does anyone know if we can order the plates beforehand and get them fitted on the 12th? I can give my son a letter explaining all this if necessary.
Any advice would be appreciated.

This company has a shop in Paphos and if you send the message above to them using the contact form they should be able to help.

Droushiotis car accessories will replace your existing number plates and will not ask you if it's your motor, cost about €25 for front and back (same registration).

Do you not have to produce the Registration Document as the new plates will be dated.

No on both cars I changed to the newer style plates, just call in or phone. You maybe ask George who makes them up and fits them while you wait, by all means, take along your registration doc's or MOT certificate, but I was not asked for them.

You just take the ticket & get it registered at one of the machines before you leave!

With the new plates I think you will find that your licence plate is registered when you receive your parking ticket. When you pay the parking charge the payment is registered against that licence plate so that when you exit the parking area you don't even have to put the parking ticket into the machine. The system reads your licence plate remotely and lifts the barriers to allow you to exit.

All this is if you have the readable number plates. If not then I think you have to put your ticket in the exit machine to get out.

I have old style number plates on my car. These are recognised at the short-term/uncovered car park at Paphos airport, but not by the cameras in the covered part of the parking area. Presumably because the cameras were installed at different times, a few years apart.

I think the reason the authorities want the new No. plates is, that Police ANPR machines need them so they can check road tax/Insurance etc.

Toooo many poor Cypriots and us Pensioners can't afford to change plates @ 25Euros a pair on our Beamers and Mercs.

For what it's worth, NPR technology works fine here in UK with standard plates. The fuzz on the roadside, in their white tranny vans, checking for uninsured / stolen cars...

Asda car parks. Dover P&0 check in. LTN 30 min short stay car park. They all read your plate with no problem! As does the Dartford toll bridge and tunnel crossing...

There is something else going on here as regards Cyprus registered commercial vehicles methinks?
Gone but not forgotten...

Changing commercial vehicle plates is a business expense, deductible in Company accounts.
