Wailing sirens to mark coup, invasion 15 July & 20 July

Post by PhotoLady »

Just so nobody can say they weren't warned ;-)

Air raid sirens will be sounding on Saturday and next Thursday to mark the 1974 coup and subsequent Turkish invasion of the island, the civil defence said.

The sirens will sound across the republic – at 8.20am, the time the coup started, on July 15, and 5.30am on July 20.

When we lived in Surrey we used to hear sirens every monday at 10AM. They even made it into popular culture, in the song "Sound of the Suburbs"

Every lousy Monday morning
Heathrow jets go crashing over our home
Ten o'clock Broadmoor siren
Driving me mad, won't leave me alone
The woman next door just sits and stares outside
She hasn't come out once ever since her husband died

Presumably when they tested them, they had a lockdown at Broadmoor, otherwise it would be the perfect time to escape.

For years I was impressed that I could hear the sirens in Camberley, as Broadmoor was a few miles away. I was quite disappointed when I realised that there were actually several sirens, and I was hearing the one placed at Camberley Town Centre.

Being here for thirty years, we have heard them many times, and I dont think theres a more scary and sad sound to hear, it really fills me with sadness and as Im laying in bed, my thoughts go from the Cyprus invasion to the blitz in Britain, air raids etc etc

An absolute pain in the butt which always wakes us up on July 20th.
What do they achieve by these sirens? Zilch.
If the Turks wanted to invade the RoC the best time to do it would be when these sirens are switched on, nobody would twig.

You really are a nasty piece of work
Sounding the sirens on these two days is a reminder to the Cypriots of the tragic events that occurred.
If its a pain in the butt for you being woken up, may I suggest you go and live back in the UK, because If I hated a country I lived in as much as you obviously do, I would get the hell out as soon as possible,

I don't hate Cyprus, just the sirens at 5.30 am. If it was later in the day (like on the 15th July) no problem.
May I remind you, the reason the Turks invaded was caused by the GCs themselves!
If you don't believe me look it up on the internet.

Your insensitive comments....tell us everything about you....
I wonder if you would say the same to your Cypriot neighbors...not a chance

Date (not dates) - 20th July.
Good idea, we'll do that this year.

I get the impression he will be awake for that one... It's the very early one on 20th that Geoffrey takes issue with.
