Work on cultural village begins this year

Post by memory man »

Work on the construction of the cultural village of Lemba, in Paphos are to begin by the end of year, the project’s architects announced.

Spyros Spyrou, member of the team that won the architectural competition for the creation of the cultural village of Lemba, told the Cyprus News Agency that the team was commissioned by the state cultural services in May to carry out the study for the project as well as the supervision. The Competition was organised by the education ministry which wants to create an arts centre in the village

The project envisages the construction of two main building complexes. One would house the art school which will include workshops and the second would provide living quarters for students, teachers and artists.

In 1981, Lemba became home to the Cyprus College of Art, which was set up by artist Stass Paraskos, who renovated the former school building of the village and turned it into artists’ studios. The village is now home to several artists who decided to settle there.

The establishment of the cultural village is part of government plans to upgrade the existing infrastructure and turn Lemba into a centre for arts and culture.

Spyrou said the aim was for construction work to begin before the end of the year. Based on the contract, work must finish within six months, Spyrou said. Charis Christodoulou, Aggela Zisimopoulou and Charis Solomou were the other members of the winning team of architects.
