Paphos Villages: Letymbou

Over the last few months, we have blogged about a number of abandoned villages in the Paphos region. As the summer holidays are approaching we thought it would be nice to change the focus to the non-abandoned villages. First up is Letymbou. We chose this first because on a recent forum discussion somebody mentioned that Letymbou was famous for having TEN churches. We felt that needed investigation, as we had only ever seen two on our travels.

Went there earlier this year. Great walks as well as ruins. Local inhabitants are lovely. Try to pop into a local coffee shop is you can and partake of cyprus coffee and snacks with the elderly gents. They are so nice and welcoming.

Yet again, another fascinating and interesting blog, Dominic. Tear-jerking in parts (Heroes), but as always, stunning photos from you! One photo missing, however- YOU sitting outside the Coffee Shop!

I had intended to alert you to a few typos (like "earthquake stroke" > "earthquake struck" for example), but then realised you'd imported large chunks of historical text from another site... So best left as it is, since it's perfectly readable and quite 'quaint'!

Cannot believe that a thriving village like Letymbou, with tavernas, bars, coffee shops, filling station and so on, does NOT have a single Kiosk / Minimarket!!

Of course there is a Mini-market/Kiosk in Letymbou where you also can buy petrol and gas etc. as 2 pics show....

Thanks for the update, Max. It's just that Dom said in his blog there was no such shop in Letymbou, but there are TWO in nearby Polemi...

"We didn't find any supermarkets in Letymbou, so if you are visiting and want provisions, head for Polemi, where you will find two."

I was buying something in this mini-market some years ago. When I drive through the village the next days I will find out for sure if it is still the same. In the meantime some ads, mentioning a "Supermarket" in the village.

Great respect for Dominic doing Blogs like that, where you have to travel in this heat which we have at the moment finding the best locations for nice photos. Thank you. Letymbou is one of my favorite little villages around Paphos district not only because it is the home and birthplace of my best Cypriot friends. I have a guest blog about crystals from the area which will include Letymbou as well, nearly ready to publish, but I will delay it because in this heat it will be too much stress if members will follow the round trip of 45 km I have done. But it will be before the first rain on the horizon...

Concerning the amount of places where you can enjoy a nice meal in this village are more than the two which are well known. I was invited several times in "coffee-shops" (perhaps no official licence) on the main road for a great Mezze which had to be ordered in advance..and this was the real Cyprus which is nowadays difficult to find. But one have to try...

Max you refer to two places to eat....I had cause to be in the village several evenings but the Vineyard (I think that is correct) was shut every night. Has it closed down?

The Vineyard was the tavern with the bingo sign. So I doubt it is closed.

I have been to the restaurent in question about 6 weeks ago.. It has changed hands and is being run by another English couple. I was there with my walking group for a pre arranged meal. Will ask around and try to find out what is happening there and what their opening hours are.

Just come back from Letymbou this morning and had a short conversation with the local mukhtar, which told me that since ca 1 year the mini-market is closed. Asking about the Vineyard tavern he said they open ever and anon for example next Friday. The next little supermarket is just up the hill towards Kallepia with the advantage that they are open 24/7.

Is the petrol station still open, or is that closed too? Where abouts is the 24/7 supermarket? I didn't think there was anything between Letymbou and Kallepia.

I asked only about the mini-market. The whole village looked like dead 11 am but it was really hot then. The 24/7 market is near Kallepia, just
200 m before on the main road.( But much closer than Polemi.)

Blimey! It's good that a small village mini-market can manage 24/7 opening hours like that! Okay, things will likely cost a bit more than the main supermarkets in Paphos, but it's all about convenience and spur of the moment wishes, so good luck to them for trying, I say!
