Keeping oool

Post by Anarita John »

Today, the hottest day of the year so far, we have run our aircon throughout the house (a 3 bedroom bungalow with a large lounge and dining room) and used, with assistance from our pv panels, 35.2Kwh of electric through our eac meter. Cost, at €0.05 per Kwh through net metering, €1.76. We've got visitors at the moment, so have had all 5 aircon units, set at around 23c.

In total, during a 24 hour period, we have used 61.6Kwh, which, would have cost us €17.86.

We've managed to keep cool in exceptionally high temperatures at minimum cost. To me, it is a no brainer. Everyone, even those who are only here for the 90 days in every 180, should get PV panels and invertor air con units.

You are absolutely correct John, photo-voltaic modules and inverter air-cons are the things "to have" here in Cyprus. As the sun shines more than the mentioned 180 days, one collects even more kW/h credit on the meter when there is no consumption. But when you are back on island, there are no worries of too high consumption when you run aircons all day long.

My last bill from EAC was a nice surprise for me as it was one of the lowest since I installed PV with only 12 Euro for the period 28.3-30.5.) plus 2000 units credit for the 2 month.
The reason was the very mild winter this year in my area at the hinterland of Paphos, so I needed less hours air-cons for heating the place than other years.

I assume you are getting that info on your KWh usage and cost from your meter? Or do you have some kind of app?

We have a VRV that powers our ducted aircon units in the house. However, as we only use the units in the rooms where we are at the time, I am wondering if having a house-wide VRV was the best idea. Probably so if you are running multiple units in your house, but if you are running only 1 or 2, perhaps standalone inverters are cheaper for electricity consumption? Any views on this?

One, standalone 23btu LG aircon unit cools our bungalow, downstairs area. When it is very hot, we put our 19btu unit on in our lounge, Last week, we had elderly visitors from the UK, and the heat was exceptional, so we ran all 5 air con units at around 20c, which maintained a temp of 22c throughout the house.

The new, invertor units do not freeze the house like the old ones did. Tonight, our 23btu in the open plan area is set at 26c and the room temp is 25c, throughout our downstairs area, which is ver comfortable.
