Paphos Beaches During A Storm

Post by Dominic »

Last week we showed you what Paphos Seafront looked like after a storm. This week we go one better, and show you what the whole of the South Coast of Paphos looks like during a storm. Well, most of it anyway. It is still blowing a gale, but here you can see our experience when we went out filming on Sunday morning.

Thank you for the very impressive video. Very brave, I hope you was better dressed than some of the tourists one could see with only short sleeve t-shirt and shorts...

"The thick foam in the sea occurs when the salt water combines with the waste of living organisms in the sea and everything is mixed together by the strong currents. The result is a thick foam reminiscent of frothed milk for cappuccino (hence the name!)." source: PaphosPress

Concerning the protecting wall to extend towards Elean etc would not only destroy the design of the new nice harbour promenade but would be a waste of money as it would not protect the promenade when big storms appear.

If you look at the Goggle map one can see why the area around Elean and towards the end of the promenade near the bath is more effected than areas near the harbour (where a wall still is).

The ancient harbour walls in the sea is the reason, why areas are more protected than others.

Actually, even with the old Roman wall which is mainly submerged near the harbour, it is still unsafe to leave the boats which are normally moored there when a storm threatens. Hence most boat owners remove their boats elsewhere...
The small sea wall around the harbour, once extended the length of the sea front. It didn't look awful and it presumably didn't put tourists off from coming here. It did help to reduce the amount of detritus washed up along the harbour and also reduced the amount of sea water flooding to the shops and eateries there...
I am not the only one who remembers the situation here in 2000!
However enormous changes have happened since then some of them have vastly improved the look of the harbour area and Paphos town generally,

Well, I did not like the old wall, it looked horrible as one can see on the photo from the past, showing the wall opposite Elean .....
