I just watched that very informative video about vegetables and thought some on here will be interested too .....

Specially I liked the part at 8:31: "the dirty dozen and the clean 15", which explains chemicals or pesticides one can find in veggies.

In the Cyprus context, the list would be quite different, mainly because of the vast amounts of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides and football sides in the country. Notwithstanding, it may start ringing some alarm bells. However, it is good to remind us that eating well starts with good food.

Wonder if you read the Cyprus Mail, as recently there was an article about the EU trying to enforce the Pesticide and Insecticide ban on Cyprus Agriculture vegetable and fruit farmers?
What did the farmers do but raise their hands and voices and to complain bitterly that without the use of these their crops would be ruined and their families would suffer.
They backed their views up by organising a protest in Nicosia when they blockaded the Presidential Palace. The Cy Mail photographer went along to take a photo of their long cavalcade of tractors blocking the area near the Presidential Palace.

Will this ban be implemented here? I remember huge protects took place before the ban on the use of Lanate was made illegal.

I seem to recall Cyprus is the worst offender in the EU in terms of overuse of pesticides.

That's why my favourite crop (fruit) are Avocados which get normally no pesticides in Cyprus, however the big disadvantage is that they need a lot of water, even more than citrus fruits which need 40-50 l per tree every 4 days in summer.

How come the fruit trees in abandoned farms still produce plenty of crops then?

I have , lemon, orange and tangerine, trees in my garden, i planted them 30 years ago, apart from watering them, i have never put any chemicals on them and never pruned them etc, bumper crop every year, and juicy as they come

I know a few abandoned trees that keep me stocked up with lemons.

Just to add, when friends come round especially cypriot friends, they go into their Titchmarsh mode, telling me i should cut this back trim that, cut this cut that, my reply is why fix what isn't broken, with the lemons my wife makes lemonade, lemon cake etc etc
