Old Paphos Police Station restauration

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Just found this in the Paphos Press which I believe is a necessary project just opposite the Municipality building....

Google translation:

"Yesterday, the Municipality of Paphos announced the tender for the project "Creation of the Historical Documentation Center of the City of Paphos and Development of the Surrounding Space".

This is a pioneering project for the city, which will include a Museum to highlight and promote the history of the city and the regeneration of customer areas and streets in the area that stretches from the Old Central Police Station to the Armenian Park.

The central idea that runs through the project is the creation in the heart of the historical center of Paphos of a pocket of culture and architectural heritage with high-quality infrastructure for pedestrians. Through the project, the Municipality of Paphos aims to create a bridge of memory and architecture between the Museum of Historical Memory and the exterior of the old town.

The project, the value of which is estimated at €9,500,000 plus VAT (€11,305,000) includes, among other things, the

complete restoration and reuse of the old police station building for use as a historical documentation center for the city of Pafos, the addition and extension of the former police station building to meet the needs of the new use and the shaping of the area from the old police station to the park Armenians. It also includes landscaping with greenery, footbridge, shelters, urban equipment, etc.

The interested economic entities can find the tender notice and documents on the website of the Municipality of Pafos www.pafos.org.cy and on the website www.eprocurement.gov.cy.

Sounds a great new project which will come with a high cost down to the generosity of EU funds. My regret is that so many of the old historical buildings in Paphos town centre have been lost in the last 20 years. Either just obliterated and replaced by soulless new buildings, multi floored, and built mainly in concrete, steel and glass, or as recently, externally altered and now replaced with huge, identical, glass shop fronts or windows. The Paphos market building being the latest.
Just think how different Paphos would look now had many of them which were sound, been 'sympathetically restored?'. This also includes the old Turkish Baths, which was modernised, but its interior was completely stripped out. If you go to Nicosia, or Limassol their bath houses were restored which is interesting for tourists. Other buildings and some old town centre streets have also been restored. Paphos also has a very fine Mosque, which was completely restored and of interest, but its gates are securely locked and it is, as far as one knows unused.
