The veteran television presenter fronted Blue Peter for 12 years in the 1960's and 70's. His family announced the news on Monday morning, saying he had suffered from Alzheimer's in recent years.
My Dad met him. He went on Blue Peter once to demonstrate the satellite he was launching. The first we knew about it was when he appeared on screen while we were watching it at home. He had kept it quiet from us, but let Mum know so she could make sure we were watching.
He said he was very nice but that his car was incredibly messy.
