2021 Cyprus Tax

Post by Mark »

Just had an email from the tax department.
The last date for the 2021 submission is 31st July, failure to submit incurs a fine.
The fine is only payable if your income is above €19200, below that a return is not necessary.

Mark, just to confirm: I had thought that everyone had to complete a return now, regardless of income. But the email you received said not?

My income is less than €19500 ,but have always submitted a tax return, simply because, in the future the tax people will want to check ,at probate perhaps.
The thought of proving my income ,say 20 years ago would be stressful...
They must check at some stage , otherwise everybody would simply say that they don't have an income of €19500+....
Btw the tax return takes around 30 mins to complete and submit in my case....

Just as a point of note, when you had to go to the tax office to get my DT1 processed, the lady behind the enquiry counter said that I need to complete a tax return each year irrespective of your income....which do you believe?
If you never ask the question, the answer will always be....no

I am sure that the tax autority has highlighted this to cut down on the number of zero tax returns which still have to be processed. Thus saving time and cost.

The past couple of years or so it’s been a doddle doing my husband’s tax return as a lot of the information was already entered. This year there were some amendments to the form & I ended up making a few errors which the system wouldn’t let me correct.

I emailed the tax office on Friday & was surprised when I received a reply yesterday with suggestions of how to amend the entries. Unfortunately nothing worked so yesterday afternoon I sent another email asking how I could start again from scratch.

This morning I’ve had another email asking for his TIC which I duly sent & almost immediately received a reply stating that I could now start again from the beginning. I shall be extra careful this time.

I am amazed at such a quick response from a government department. Well done to the tax department, or at least to the person who responded to my emails.
