Rotten wood

As there's no DIY forum, I thought I'd try the General area.

I have a fence post with a small rotten area. To remove or repair the post would involve more than the usual amount of work, so I would like to try a different solution.

Years ago, in the UK, I had a window sill with a rotten area. A joiner came, dug out a lot of the rotten timber and painted/impregnated the remaining area with a solution which stopped the rotting and rendered the surrounding area as hard as nails. He then made good the area removed. Whatever he used was effective until at least I left the property five years later. I have no idea what the liquid he used was called, and I cannot find anything similar here in the usual DIY shops around Paphos.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?!

In Dutch the liquid is called Ontweringswater, but I cannot find the word for it in English. Maybe this article makes sense.

Louise - that is so very helpful. I am returning to the UK in a couple of weeks so I now know what I'm looking for. In the meantime, I can but try and find it on the island.

Ronseal do a wet rot wood hardener which sounds like the item you are looking for, you can get it at B&Q, Screwfix, Homebase, etc!

I had to repair my shed in the UK. This is what I used:

I then filled in the holes with this:

It was extremely difficult reviewing the products without saying "It did exactly what it said on the tin".

Oh, and I also bought one of these, for the application of the wood hardener. Not strictly necessary, but it lets you get the hardener exactly where you want it.
