The Car rental company has card detail's, so just as the UK the fine will be taken from your card.

When the police start coming after the rental companies for payment of fines, you will find that they will begin to ask for credit card details in the future

When I was hiring cars regularly a few years ago, I asked the owner of the rental company what happened if Police made enquires for offences.

He said he gave details if they were non EU, but if regular EU customers he would refuse. He said they had to go and get a court order before he would supply details as he had no legal obligation without. The Police would never follow up as the court order was to much trouble and cost for low grade offences.

Obviously to hand over customers details to the Police is not good for business. If this is still the case, or he was just trying to reassure me I don't know.
Sorry not buying it, car involved in hit and run, police ask rental owner for details, owner says not giving them to you, he is a good customer of mine, nah, if I was the copper I would arrest the owner for, hindering his investigation's

Not necessarily, if they hit a pedestrian, I have a mate who owns a rental, and I will ask him what the position is,

That's fair enough, but the question is,.... Are they legally required, I would think many rental companies's would just comply to requests, especially if serious.
Im not sure if they are legally required?, but why would any owner want to P off the police? rental owners have cars parked all over the place around their rental offices, it wouldn't take a Peed off police officer long to start issuing parking fines would it, im guessing the owner who told you he doesn't give details to the police, was just trying to keep you in his good books, but I will ask my mate, who has been in the business for forty years here.

Not impossible, but is getting banged up worth the effort?

I received an email from Europcar telling me they had deducted £100 to pay a parking fine. We were staying at the Holiday Inn, Lancaster and the Parking Eye Camera booked me for using the car park even though we were staying there. There's a lengthy appeal procedure and it took me over six months to get our money back, no apology, nothing.

All they need to do is fine the owner of the car, ie the rental company.

This thread is all about hire cars, but no doubt plenty of cars driven by both Cypriots and foreigners who are resident here will also get caught by the speed cameras. At present running the lights on amber or red is akin to normal procedure, for some motorists. Maybe though it may be a deterrent to some drivers.
At present most times when the traffic lights turn to red up to 3 cars will shoot over the traffic lights.. this is a dangerous practice. Hopefully we will all be safer if those driver are caught by the cameras and have to pay a fine.

I agree with you re running red lights, how ever the cameras being fitted now, will be speed cameras and not cameras on traffic lights

Maybe you are right, but if the aim of fitting an expensive camera system is to improve road safety, I thought that some would be fitted at busy road junctions. This would also pinpoint the sometimes high speeds of cars when jumping the lights.

This is the statement about the cameras to be fitted in October

" Markos Markou, acting head of the department of electro-mechanical services, said the cameras will record speeding, red light violations, crossing the waiting line at traffic lights, failure to wear a seatbelt and use of a mobile phone.

He said the system will be handed over for a three-month trial run in late October. A total of 20 fixed cameras and 16 mobile ones will be in operation in the first six months "
