Parking fines

Post by WHL »

We keep reading on here that the Cypriot police are useless at catching people parking, talking on mobiles etc etc, well let me kill that urban myth, just took my wife to the seafront for a coffee, found a parking spot with meter, parked the car withing the white lines, put my money into the meter, and went for a coffee,, came back one hour twenty minutes later, to find a ticket on my windscreen, what the ticket was for, I had parked opposite to on coming traffic, no problem hands up, I'm guilty as charged, what did make my eyes water was the amount, yes folks a one hundred euro fine, so went to the nearest cop shop to pay it, and I was told, you can only pay tommorow at a bank or on line, be careful out there when parking, and don't listen to people who they say cops don't do their jobs, and no one pays their fines anyway.

Ouch! That’s a hefty fine but yes you did break the law. I didn’t realise the penalties were that stiff.

If you don't pay your fine it goes to the courts, and you end up paying a much bigger fine a few years down the line.

€100 sounds steep though. But you are right about parking against the flow of traffic. it is a big nono in Cyprus.

Nearly every driver in Cyprus parks on the side facing oncoming traffic, Heaven forbid they have to walk across the road to a kiosk.

That's why I went straight to the cop shop to pay, I also wanted to confirm its the reason for the fine, I said to the copper on the desk, dont you think 100euro was a bit steep, and he rattled off some other driving offences which the fines had gone up more then my fine,

I thought the police here didn't enforce parking offences, only traffic wardens? There was an outcry some months ago when it was revealed that some areas didn't have any parking wardens, so parking offences were never penalised.

The parking ticket would be issued by a Warden. But WHL went to the police station to enquire about it

The parking ticket today was issued by the police not a warden.

The parking ticket today was issued by the police not a warden. I know that because on the other side of the road there is a carpark (which I should of used) and the guy who issues the tickets, saw them issuing the tickets to several cars along with mine, he told me it was the police who issued them, and the policeman in the station confirmed that

Can I just ask again about it. Was it a parking ticket? (because you had paid for parking) . Or was it for a traffic violation ie parking facing oncoming traffic?

It was for parking facing on coming traffic, the ticket had one hundred euro fine on it , time date, reg number, on a printed out slip.

We received a small leaflet with an update on all the revised fixed penalty rates that came into effect from October, in our postbox late last summer, followed up by a text with a link to road safety Cyprus, including the one described by WHL in his original post. Unfortunately they don’t translate the details into English on the website and I don’t have a scanned copy but they are detailed on the attached link.

https://www.agplaw.com/cyprus-introduce ... -offences/

If you’d seen the near misses caused by people trying to move off from the wrong side of the road on Ellados Avenue in Paphos earlier today in the space of about a minute, €100 would have been a bargain. 😂. The area around the Hellenic Bank opposite Sklavenitis seems to be a particular hotspot for this.

We all get pissed off at being fined for a minor infraction of the law but as a visitor, parking the wrong way in Cyprus is a new one to me

Perhaps Dominic may give it a mention in one of his blogs

After the first car moved another car took it's place parked opposite traffic and completely blocking crossing . This happened opposite a LARGE and EMPTY and FREE carpark. I don't argue with being fined for parking or traffic violations but this needs to be applied to all, not just a few.
Since I got nicked the other day, I seem to spend alot of my time. noticing how many cars are parked facing on coming traffic, and its a substantial number, but at the end of the day, you do the crime you do the time, I for one have learnt my lesson, you cant worry what others do.
