Dominic- think you should seriously consider a 5 minute time-out on user edits?

Else any subsequent replies could be meaningless and out of context! What think ye?

I've set it to 5 minutes, as you aren't the first person to have pointed this out.

I agree definitely a bad move, you should be able to always edit your own postings, things change your message may change due to unforeseen circumstances, not good Dominic, sorry.,

In fact this has just happened, my internet has just gone belly up, so editing this could simple message could have been impossible.

I have edited the setting to give you 30 minutes editing time. This setting is more to dissuade people from changing all their posts in a thread en masse, thus rendering the thread unreadable to anybody else.

If after 30 minutes, you feel your post needs changing, just make another post with the correction.

I would much rather have seen the 'Quick Reply' box deleted. Hardly a day goes by when I do not get 'caught' by this. I create my post, then try to add a smiley or embolden/italicise parts of the post...and find I can't because I inadvertantly posted in the 'Quick Reply' box instead of the 'Post Reply' box. I then have to copy the post, delete it, come out of the thread, re-find the thread and remember this time to use the Post Reply box. Soooo frustrating!

All you have to do is click the Full Editor and Preview button, which is next to the Submit button

Never found this on other forums in the past, do remember I have seen many times members posting names out of order, maybe by mistake who knows, but without the edit or indeed the removal "X" button many could be in serious legal problems, sorry but this is not a good idea and for sure will lead to members having problems, please retain the edit button or indeed the removal option..

But you are the boss.

for instance spelling mistakes. we all make those (see above).

An interesting modification. I sort of understand where you are coming from (but can also see Lloyd's side of the argument) as if you reply to someone and then they change what they said, then it stops the thread making sense.

So, a vote in favour here, if you want to rephrase what you wrote, you will just have to post again.



At least admin aren't editing or adding to other people's posts

Never had a problem with it...

I can see that a five minute rule does help stop those that like to change their post (and meaning thereof) after the event.

There is of course always the option of the 'Preview' button; which I use every post to make sure that quote formatting, etc. is correct. That also gives you a chance for one final 'proof read' before hitting 'Submit'.

If I intend to make a long reply to a post I copy the original and make my reply in a document editor - thus assuring that the original post is retained in its entirety anyway.




Of course, one of the benefits of using the quote system is that you capture what the previous poster actually said

I tend to use my mobile phone to browse the forums earlier in the morning whilst I'm having my first brew of the day.... it's very difficult to be able to post, preview and then make any edits on a mobile so yes, sometimes when I see the typos etc when I finally get to my laptop a bit later, I prefer to make the "fixes"....

If someone has replied to the thread after me - then it shows that I have edited my own post. I don't have a problem with this. Also, sometimes you may feel the need to change something in light of comments which may be said further down.

And we have all clearly seen how not everyone will continue to read further down a thread when they see a comment they want to jump on from a great height. So adding an extra comment later in a thread may be futile in any event...

I don't know why Dominic felt it necessary to make the change but am guessing something may have happened which some of us missed

I hate it. I am a stickler for correct spelling/grammar and hate it if I make a mistake which I invariably do using these silly smart devices. I may not go back in for a few hours or more after posting. I think you should be able to edit - I can't think of once using this forum that I have thought the thread didn't read right due to this. Most people are sensible enough to say 'I have now edited my post...' etc. if it has a major effect on the thread. Not necessary to take it out in my opinion for the very few scenarios that it may affect the reading of a thread.

Let's see how it goes. What is changed can also be unchanged. An alternative would be to modify the site rules so that anybody who abuses the facility gets banned, either temporarily or permanently.

OK lets explain what could happen and in CL case what did happen several times.

Legal issues arose because members posted personal names and business's in a defamatory way, we gave them the option to edit or remove what could have been legal problems for them and the forum owners, and on several occasions this is indeed what happened, so we let them either edit or remove their postings if they were indeed inflammatory as it was with us the admin getting in the neck for allowing this kind of name dropping, now on this forum this will not be possible for the member to remove or edit his or her postings, this could lead to possible legal issues I'm sure NO forum owner ever wishes to face.

The member could always ask Dominic/admin to remove or edit the postings which were deemed inflammatory.

Easy Dominic remove the post as only you can now.

It saved admin on many occasions getting into legal problems, but you will find this out no doubt.

Brian (Happy Birthday) I'm sure Dominic does want members always contacting him, also reading very post members make can be very time consuming, contacting the site owner would happen far too often as it did with us.

Again his decision he knows best of course, happy to abide with any changes he wishes to make, but on this one you need to know what could happen and indeed does.
