Newbie

Post by dodo »

Hello everyone,
Just thought id say hello.
Were sat at home here in the UK(Birmingham) having a beer and watching the rain coming down 😥
Sold our place back here in late Feb and since been trying to get Cyprus to start our property search, our next trip is booked 13th July. We in touch with Sold on Cyprus agents and also a solicitor and its gonna get a bit tight trying to get residency. My husband will be retiring so we know to get it sorted to pay tax in Cyprus on his pension. If anyone has any information you think is invaluable please get in touch, but no doubt you'll see me popping up on here regularly.😎

Welcome to the group Dodo... You will get lot of info here but unfortunately at the moment things are changing week to week so nothing is 100% certain.. Even your trip in July cannot be guaranteed at the moment.
But good luck and I hope you get out here before too long.

More than likely things will start opening up sooner than later, possibly July if all goes well.
The Cyprus government is pretty laid back in relation to registering and generally accept an appointment receipt or a receipt to prove you've had an interview. Once you arrive and get settled get in touch with Gwenny and she will sort things out for you.
Relax, don't worry.

Gwenny is very nice and does a lot of the heavy lifting for Brit expats who arrive here.

However, if you are up for a challenge, I strongly suggest you do it all yourself. If you are good at personal anger management, and can smile through adversity, then there is no better way to learn about living in Cyprus. It can be frustrating, puzzling, and will take lots of your time. But you will be pleased you did.

There are lots of people on here with experience to draw upon. However daft your question, we have heard worse.

Thank you, also to get residency is it enough to get your application in by the end of year, do you need to be on the island while it's being processed, or everything needs to be completed by end year?
I've been reading so much stuff I've confused myself🙄
I'm a bit of a worrier and nothings going smoothly this year🤷‍♀️
Told you I'd be popping up😁

You definitely don't need to use any third party to move here. The process is straightforward and there is no heavy lifting involved.

I said in my first post that once your application is in the system you're covered. I know this for a fact as my wifes MU2 had expired and we contacted immigration several times and were told that as long as we had the payment receipt there wasn't a problem in country. Her problem as a person from a Third World Country was until she received her MU3 she couldn't leave the country. After December we don't know if the British who will become TCNs will have the same restrictions.

You asked for any information Dodo.We have been here for 17 years and love it.However a little bit of advice which could save you a problem.Where ever you decide to settle, rent or buy, check out your prospective neighbours both night and day for barking dogs.I know of two friends who failed to do this and to their cost both financially and stress.

Newbie,
Practically, are you a British Citizen with a UK issued passport?" If you are, you are advised by the British High Commission, Nicosia to obtain your MEU 1 form before December this year. All the rules change when the UK leaves the EU at the end of December. You will need to be on the island before in order to do this. The MEU 1 is a Registration certificate issued by the Immigration Office.
To get all the advice log on to the BHC's web site as there is loads of information on here.

One other piece of advice is not to rush into buying a house immediately, unless you already know the island well. It is better to rent first. This gives you much more time to look around.

Hope this helps.

Hello and welcome. As others have said, don't rush into buying, it could be a costly mistake! There are so many beautiful areas to live, and places to suit all tastes.

We were in Cyprus from 2010 - 2013, roughly every 5 wks we'd be in Paphos having booked into hotel for long weekends as we got to love the place. Came back 2018 for a holiday, hired a car and visited Chloraka, Peyia,Tala, Kathikas as we'd already made the decision to move, we lost touch with our mate who lives in the universal area but luckily we are back in touch with him and last year we came back out, he took us to his place, drove us around the universal showing us different styles of property available there, and to the above places again. Personally I'd rather be more central for the shops, beaches, social, walking and near a bus route as not drive and if hubby didn't have to drive everywhere he'd be happy but if we found the perfect place then all that may go out the window! We've taken on board all the advice so far, I will check out the websites and we wont rush, we already considered renting if needed. If theres any areas you think worth mentioning please do.

Wherever you choose to live, coast, town village, please keep in mind it gets cold in the winter months, so a place with heating would be of benefit.
If you never ask the question, the answer will always be....no

Whatever you do, when it comes to packing your clothes, don't forget to bring warm winter clothes, including woolies and warm jackets. Many people don't realise the extremes in the climate here until they live here throughout the whole year! Same applies for bedding too.
Cyprus climate isn't tropical!

Hi,
Maybe I worded it wrong but we lived in Cyprus from 2010- 13 as hubby military, so had 3 winters there but thanks for reminding me I could well have given a load away once the charity shops reopen.
