After a new delivery of wood, we found it quite difficult to start a fire and then keep it going. I discovered that the kindling I had used had burnt to nothing and so there was no really hot base to the fire.
Puzzled I went to the log burner shop and asked for their advice. It turns out that, for the last fifteen months, I had been laying the fire in the wrong way. They suggested placing a couple of logs at the bottom of the fire and then a couple of those condensed briquettes, and finally some kindling on the top. A fire-lighter completes the job. It would appear that (although flames go upward) fires burn down.
Back home we went and followed the instructions. After the sun went down I lit the fire-lighter. It spluttered and lit and I was quite prepared for it to go out. More flame appeared and soon the fire was well alight. When the time came to add more wood, you could see there was a hot base for it to ignite.
It may be that this is common knowledge to the more experienced of you but just in case you are still wearing “L” plates ..
Log burner ... you may already know this
Re: Log burner ... you may already know this
I just get a log and hit it with an axe a few times to get all the kindling I need. It also releases pent up aggression, which explains why I am such a pussycat online.
