I’ve always found the reverse to be true. And the worst prices are had if you turn up in person and book on the day. I could never understand why.

I must admit that we have always booked direct but via the hotels website...
There was one time when this approach failed when one of the Manchester Airport hotels had resold
our room... Together with others we were left to lie in the lounge as no rooms were available.
I know some of the other people got better compensation then we did because they had used a 'booking company'

A few years back I signed up for free access to Which's online service. It was the usual trial you could opt out of before a certain date to avoid paying the annual fee.

Anyway, I didn't find the service useful but had a great deal of difficulty opting out. They actually wanted me to write a letter (not email) to their accounts department in order to cancel the subscription. It was at that point I lost faith in this consumer group.
