Ivis Maliotou Park bulldozed

Post by Yioula »

The news that the municipal authorities have bulldozed this lovely tranquil area that has been here for years is outrageous
Dominic you did a blog of this area sometime ago now it’s totally destroyed 😢

Apparently they are putting another park in its place.

Dominic it was an area that had that extra something very tranquil and cool in the summer heat, hopefully it will be replaced by another green area but it will never be the same, this park has been there for decades........

It was also barely used. I did a number of photo shoots there, and I very rarely had company. Most of Paphos seemed to have forgotten about it. Perhaps if people had lobbied for the council to tidy it up it would have been looked after better.

Mind you, I'm not sure flattening and starting from scratch was the answer. It all depends on what happens next I guess.

The lady that recently posted about this on Facebook who was absolutely devastated said that they had lobbied and requested for several years for money to upgrade and maintain this park. Some said that the cost of the bulldozer and equipment used to cut down the beautiful trees could have been used for maintenance. I am quite sure it will be replaced ala the rest of Paphos with something concrete and metal. In my opinion nobody should be cutting down trees in this day and age - I cannot see any justification to have removed them in a park. So many seem to have been lost recently and I don’t quite understand how it has been allowed to happen.

Whereabouts is the park under discussion?

I posted a while ago asking if anyone knows why the area behind Papa’s main store on Ellados Rd was bulldozed and some of the mature trees removed some months ago? In particular they removed the top surface of roads which crossed this stretch of ground. Its obvious by the tyre tracks in the dirt/ mud (after rain!) that motorists are still using them. As I do sometimes. They are also used by those who use an area near Papa’s as a car park and act as a relief road when there is heavy traffic near the lights on Ellados Ave.

Wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

Recently in PaphosPress explained what happens with the park: Google translation....

"This is the official position of the Municipality of Paphos for cutting the trees in the park of Ivy Malioti
From
Pafos Press -
February 7, 2020

Every citizen knows that Ivy Malioti Park, located in the heart of Paphos on Glastonos Main Street, has not experienced any significant landscaping for decades, resulting in a picture of abandonment that does not meet the demands of the city and the needs of our society. .

Obviously, this situation, which did not honor Paphos and expose it to the eyes of thousands of local and foreign visitors, could not continue. This projected green area had to be given urgent care and renovation in order to make the city an actual jewel in one of its most prominent spots and yet another safe and quality recreational spot for its residents.

In this context, work began on cleaning the space and removing all the junk and debris that had accumulated for years. At the same time, the restoration of greenery began with the removal of aging, rotting and dangerous trees to be replaced by a much larger number of new trees, plants and flowers. It is noted that all new trees to be planted are over 20 years of age to have the required volume and size.

This is the aim of the Municipality of Pafos and this is the purpose of the work that has started and continues in the area. Any reactions recorded regarding cutting some old, dangerous and no palm trees useful are premature and excessive. The result of the renovation and landscaping of the Park will fully justify this necessary action by the Local Authority."

There was local group trying to get the municipal to maintain this area to no avail, let hope that their “spin” on the future outcome of this park comes to fruition.
Max.....thank you
