Is the General Hospital Closing?
Is the General Hospital Closing?
My Son in Law's Father who is a local was telling us the government is planning to close the General Hospital and use the Private Hospitals like Iasis, Evangelismos, Blue Coss, etc. to treat people under GESY. The Evangelismos is already being extended and have taken over part of the building next door. They eventually plan to purchase a number of the Private Hospitals.

Re: Is the General Hospital Closing?
I've not heard anything about this, but under GESY plans, from June 2020 private hospitals can be used for in-patient care. The story may have some truth, as the GH does need to either be completely modernised/refurbished (or rebuilt).
Re: Is the General Hospital Closing?
I would find this remarkable if it happens.. Go on any weekday and see how busy the car parks are...
If they close this hospital I doubt if the other hospitals would be able to cope with all the extra patients..

I wonder how many cars belong to staff eg. Doctors, nurses, admin staff, support staff & cleaners.

Re: Is the General Hospital Closing?
I agree Trev, farming out patients to private doctors and hospitals takes the strain away from the General hospitals.

Most of the doctor's and admin (but not nurses or cleaners) seem to have their own marked out undercover parking places just past the roundabout ..memory man wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:52 am I wonder how many cars belong to staff eg. Doctors, nurses, admin staff, support staff & cleaners.

We used to live near Frimley Park Hospital. Apart from some of the doctors, all the staff had to use the paid parking facilities or park in the surrounding roads. Any road anywhere near the hospital would be full of parked cars. Those hospitals take a lot of running.trevnhil wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 11:25 amMost of the doctor's and admin (but not nurses or cleaners) seem to have their own marked out undercover parking places just past the roundabout ..memory man wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:52 am I wonder how many cars belong to staff eg. The person who told us about the General works for the Council.
If you go to either X Ray or for Blood Tests at the Evangalismos they are mobbed and most of those there are using GESY.
I think it would be a good idea as the General is badly in need of a refurbishment.

Why not just use any of the Gesy private labs for blood tests it is just the same price

And the St. George for X-rays or scans. After a horrendous experience at the Evangelismos, I went to the St. George. Walked in, down the stairs to the left to the X-ray department and was the only one there. Paid €10 - in and out in no time.such pleasant staff too. Went a week later with hubby and exactly the same happened.

You're right Trev, anywhere operating under GESY can be used. The last time I went to Evangelismos was for a company medical which was prior to GESY and I was the only person in the queue at both X Ray and Blood Test Laboratory. I believe GESY has been a Godsend for the Private Clinics due to the fall in private patients.
I was sent to the Blue Cross with an ear infection as the ENT Doctor is the only one in Paphos signed up to GESY.

Re: Is the General Hospital Closing?
I would not be surprised, my GHS doctor said they should demolish it. I think GESY or the GHS will be better once it all comes together, but my needed operation will be done in a few weeks time but I am having to pay for it as GHS system does not as yet cover some surgeries or procedures. Also I will need a pre op medical that includes ECGs and blood testing, plus chest x-rays that I will have to pay for as the operation is not covered as yet by GHS system..

My partner has just had a private knee replacement op at the Blue Cross which he had to pay for, but was able use use Gesy referrals for his pre op blood tests, Xrays and MRI.
Maybe you can too.

We were delighted. Had the op on Thursday, out on Saturday afternoon, surgeon rang on Saturday evening to check all was well, 2 follow up appointments to check, all was OK and stiches (staples!) removed after 2 weeks and everything is good. Next follow up in a month.

Thank you for the information.
The Specialist at Evangelismos is going through the same process.
I understand that the government are planning to provide different levels of treatment where you get the basic treatment on GESY and the patient can pay addition costs to receive better quality replacement joints.
I need two knee joint replacements due to an accident several years ago and still debating whether to get them both done at once.
Good news your partner is on the mend.

Re: Is the General Hospital Closing?
Why does Paphos General Hospital need to have a new building for dialysis when in June the GESY Private Hospitals could be providing this service, or do they not have that facility available?
