Riccos Beach
Re: Riccos Beach
Please, it is not Riccos beach, it never has been, it is Yerouskipou Municipality beach that has this old run down cafe on it, is it legal? maybe why it is coming down? whatever they do it will be an improvement, the beach needs serious work, seaweed being the problem, recent storms always deposit this smelly stuff that the municipality does remove, it does not rot or burn, it is moved to huge piles just to the west of this beach, it really does stink. Give it a miss Alan. I will be up by the water sports hut!
huge humps of smelly seaweed, yesterday.
As the old cafe looked a few weeks ago.

Jim, the cafe is called "Riccos Beach", that's what I'm referring to.Allesley wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:04 am Please, it is not Riccos beach, it never has been, it is Yerouskipou Municipality beach that has this old run down cafe on it, is it legal? maybe why it is coming down? whatever they do it will be an improvement, the beach needs serious work, seaweed being the problem, recent storms always deposit this smelly stuff that the municipality does remove, it does not rot or burn, it is moved to huge piles just to the west of this beach, it really does stink. Re: Riccos Beach
Jim's quite right. There is a huge amount of seaweed there. Far more than you get at other beaches.

Re: Riccos Beach
There’s room for an entreprenurial person to start a sea weed processing company as it makes an excellent garden fertiliser, It’s organic and rich in nutrients.
Any one interested?
This would quickly rid beaches of this problem and might be worth doing.

Re: Riccos Beach
Afraid not Dee, the weed does not rot or burn, it just gets smelly as it is now, if you go look just west of the hotel you will see many years of this weed stockpiled, no use for anything, unfortunately, in the hope that those sea defences will maybe stop storms throwing up this mess every winter.
Ramone, we are not talking of a little weed, but many meters deep of the stuff, natural yes but very unusual to have so much every year.

Re: Riccos Beach
The seaweed by the AquaMare Hotel, absolutely pongs. I heard some tourists say they would not like to be swimming in the sea here because of all the sewerage in the sea, and I explained to them that the smell was in fact the seaweed rotting. They then asked if the hotel cleared it away and I explained that in a few weeks time, before all the hotels opened again for Easter, the Municipal Council would clear the pile of rotting, stinking seaweed away.

Re: Riccos Beach
It would seem, John, that this pile of " rotting, stinking seaweed" has clearly got up you nose.

Re: Riccos Beach
I remember many years ago we stayed at a small place called Girvan on the west coast of Scotland and they had a seaweed processing plant there for, if I remember rightly the production of kelp which has many nutritional uses besides supposedly helping with losing weight and I do remember there was quite some smell from the place! I wonder if it is still there?

Re: Riccos Beach
In the past seaweed was transported to the Marathounda rubbish dump before they closed it. There are mountains of it there.

Re: Riccos and
Well if it takes a special effort and presumably special machinery to reduce the seaweed to a dry powder, why should 19 people decide to do it when no one is taking any interest in it at present?
That seems very defeatist talk. If the is rotting seaweed is so smelly and objectionable and takes up valuable landspace to store it, you would think that the local municipality would be delighted to have a reliable operator who would remove it and create something useful and not smelly.
Before I forget, once or twice some years ago, my late husband and I collected several loads of dry seaweed from above the waterline. Taking it home we spread it out on the garden as a mulch. There was no smell at all. It dried out and eventually made good fertiliser.

According to one of the external links in this thread, Dee, it also provides tasty and protein rich soup and much more...

Re: Riccos Beach
Some of the Scottish West Coast islands, have sheep who feed on the seaweed, plus they use a lot as fertiliser....
Re: Riccos Beach
The Scottish sheep are from North Ronaldsay - google that... they have evolved over a fairly short period and now survive purely on seaweed and as it is high in iodine, their meat is regarded highly and described as ‘gamey”

I wonder where they take all the seaweed to ??
[/quote]
Trev I posted what happens to the weed, it goes just around the corner past that hotel to the back of the water park, been dumped there for years, again it is of no use as a fertilizer and it cannot be burnt, it will take many years to rot, maybe some should go take a look at the huge piles of the stuff..
I'm sure Yeroskipou Municipality would be more than happy for anyone to help themselves to it!.
