Between 350 and 1,220 job losses expected in Cyprus after Brexit
Cyprus can expect to lose up to 1,220 jobs because of Brexit, according to a study conducted by University of Leuven in Belgium.
The study suggests that all European countries will be heavily impacted by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (EU), regardless of a hard of soft exit scenario.
As far as Cyprus is concerned, a potential soft exit would mean the loss of around 350 jobs, while a hard Brexit could result in the loss of 1,220 jobs.
The study also indicates that Cyprus’ total losses in the event of a hard Brexit could amount to a total of €167 million, ranking 8th among European Union countries, whereas a potential deal would place the island at 12th on the list of added losses.
Greece is also expected to suffer heavily after Britain’s departure from the EU. A deal would mean the loss of €175 million and 1,420 jobs, while failure to reach an agreement with the EU would result in a €625 million loss, with 5,570 people ending up without a job.
Significant job losses are also expected in Poland, Sweden, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary.
Belgium will be amongst the most badly affected countries in the EU, as a hard Brexit will result in a staggering loss of 2,35% of its total GDP, an equivalent of 42,000 jobs.
In terms of sectors, a no-deal scenario would have a disastrous effect on the European food and beverages industry with over 112,000 jobs that would be lost for Europe as a whole, and even more so on the textiles industry, which is likely to suffer a loss of 130,000 jobs.
The study also suggests that for pharmaceuticals, chemical and petroleum products, a hard Brexit is expected to cost the entire EU around €14 million.

..and they, the EU fat cats, still will not budge on their demands
Re: Between 350 and 1,220 job losses expected in Cyprus after Brexit
Codswallop! Belgium is absorbing a lot of businesses leaving the UK and their employment and GDP are already rising. As for Cyprus, it is not absorbing UK businesses, like N. Europe, therefore could see a drop in employment in the hospitality industry unless the value of the GBP rises again against the EUR, which is not impossible, if unlikely in the short term.Belgium will be amongst the most badly affected countries in the EU, as a hard Brexit will result in a staggering loss of 2,35% of its total GDP, an equivalent of 42,000 jobs.

How is it that any agreement on Brexit had to be run past all the other EU countries and the EU parliament but the same facility does not apply to the UK parliament, which roundly rejected it....three times.

How is Theresa May discredited? What yardstick are you using? And where is Boris Johnson's credibility rating on that same yardstick?Varky wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:49 amProbably proposed by the discredited Teresa May.Jimgward wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 11:24 pmDo you mean the Backstop? I think Parliament should just be given the option: Theresa May's Deal or No Deal.
Vote on that.
May's deal got more votes than any other suggestion, so it should be that or no deal.

Wasn’t that thrown in the mix because the EU wanted (and still do) a hard border?Jimgward wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 11:24 pmDo you mean the Backstop? This proposal that came from the U.K.?The Aquila wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 5:11 pm ..and they, the EU fat cats, still will not budge on their demands

Wouldn’t a import / export done electronically similar to The one Switzerland has be a better option?
Re: Between 350 and 1,220 job losses expected in Cyprus after Brexit
No, the EU are insisting the border is kept open - part of the NI agreement. The UK proposed a timescale to allow resolutions too the problems and that there should be the backstop. Now Boris et al are using the backstop as an excuse. The Aquila wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 12:41 pmWasn’t that thrown in the mix because the EU wanted (and still do) a hard border?Jimgward wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 11:24 pmDo you mean the Backstop? Switzerland has huge queues and paperwork at it’s borders, on goods, even from the EU.
No IT system is in use, other than the London congestion system, that is remotely like what would be needed in Ireland. The London system relies on complete integration with DVLA - but could not be transported to the Irish border problem so easily. Also, the congestion system does not look at what is legally in a vehicle. Only what is is and if it has paid. Boris knows there’s Ebis no easy solution, but needs the UK out before money-laundering laws imposed by the EU, affect his cronies.

I spent my working life on measurement and control and there is no technology available that can confirm what's in a container. There's only two methods, the one we have in place now or we open every container and have a look inside.
The Supermarkets have been trying for years to scan the contents of a shopping trolley and as they haven't introduced the technology into their stores yet it appears they haven't had much success.
The idea of sealed borders around the EU is to prevent imports of dubious quality coming in, the type the USA will force the UK to take in the event of a trade deal after Brexit or dodgy electrical equipment for example.

I beg to differ; containers coming into the EU areas are regularly stopped and searched by C&E. Containers crossing internal borders are generally not searched but that's how the EU works. Minimum paperwork and border check which makes the flow of goods quicker and cheaper. The external border is to prevent poor quality or counterfeit items entering the Eurozone. It may not be perfect but it's much better than what Brexit is offering.

Re: Between 350 and 1,220 job losses expected in Cyprus after Brexit
You have got to be joking if you think that TM was not discredited. Not only trying three times to impose a withdrawal agreement on the UK which handed over sovereignty in a 'Backstop' giving the EU the sole right to determine its conclusion which no intelligent government would accept.
Secondly the 'Windrush' scandal perpetuated if not started under her watch as Home Secretary. My yardstick is 'common sense'. What is yours? Once again you are trying to create a fog by pointing the finger at Boris (who I would agree is far from being perfect). However we should judge him on his successes if and when they occur.
Pray tell me what are TM's meaningful successes? Stop being a 'barrack room lawyer' trying to defend the indefensible and address the point at hand

Oh pack it in. I am tired of your petty insults.
I notice you completely avoided answering my question about Boris Johnson's credibility.
