Moving to cyprus

Hi All

We have accepted an offer on our house and both parties have agreed to complete in 28 days. My head is now spinning so I am seeking advice from those of you who have made the move as to how to get through this. Any top tips will be gratefully received. Excited and scary at the same time!

Firstly... Don't worry.. When you get here there is plenty of time to do things.. Hopefully you have somewhere to come to. But even then you can get a cheap apartment whilst you look around.. And Car hire can be reasonable cheap at this time of year.

Do not give up your UK bank or building society, but of course advise them of your new address .

If you bank at Barclays, don't tell them you are moving here as they closed all our accounts 2 years ago.

Is this a spur of the moment thing, moving to Cyprus, are you looking for work, etc?

Another thought.. If you have not already got one, apply in the UK for an EHIC (medical) card for each of you.
And get proof of your no Claims Discount from your car insurers.

Renew passports and driving licences in the UK before coming over in order to have 10 years without any hassle of renewing either...

Wow thanks for all the replies. We have had property in Stroumbi for the past 3 years and prior to that we had an apt in Kato Paphos for 9 years. We have a car and I have work at the SBA I have sorted out my private health care and I have 3 months medication to come with.

We have EHIC cards and we have a good run on passports and driving licence.

If you can think of anything else please let me know

In the next few days I will be starting to put the directory live. The first category will be "Municipal Buildings" though I might think of a more catchy name than that between here and then. Basically though, it will be a directory of all the likely places a new starter will have to visit, such as Immigration and the like. Hopefully you will find that useful, and if you don't I would certainly welcome suggestions on how it could be improved.

Great idea, may I suggest you add the GPS co-ordinates so they can easily be located by satnav?

That would be trivial to implement. Good idea. The coordinates are already known, as there will be a map. So having them displayed would be straightforward. I suppose the next question is what format to display it in. I come from a geocaching background, so am used to degrees and minutes, however, the mapping service expects it all in decimal.

So what is the default format for satnavs? I could build in a converter easily enough, but it would make more sense for the default to be what most people would actually us.

That's great if you know the address. Sometimes the coordinates are all you know though.

I wouldn't recommend doing internet banking in an Internet cafe or any crowded place. I have been warned that your on line security may be breached when other people are In close proximity and using shared internet access...
I do mine at home.

Killi you are correct, sensitive or potentially risky matters such as Internet banking should only ever be used on secure locations, never on public or shared servers.

Further to Smudger's post, I would recommend using a laptop exclusively for banking. Nothing else. No facebook, no email, no downloads, no usb sticks, nothing. Just banking. Must less chance of getting a virus. Also maybe consider switching off windows updates. You can even do with with Windows 10 - bizarrely, via windows services, not updates!

I certainly wouldn't recommend disabling windows updates. Given that most of the updates are security patches, if you don't update your machine will be vulnerable.

The vast majority of threats these days are via the internet. Some of them can be real buggers to remove, too.

You can switch it off, and then update at a time and place of your own choosing. Actually, you can't switch off updates on Windows 10; they've specially tried to stop you doing this! You have to "disable" it. And then you can put it back on again. And then you don't get some massive download when you least want it - in the middle of your internet banking. Somebody might correct me, but I think with W10 you can choose when to "install", but not when to download, unless you are a corporate user (not individual).

It downloads in the background, and once ready to install it lets you know. You can postpone it until your next reboot or do it immediately.
