Last night's rain another 25 l/m2 - good chance dam will overflow

I had the feeling last night that it never stopped raining until 7 AM and after measuring, it was 25 l/m2. So I believe there is a good chance for our Paphos dam Asprokremmos to overflow this springtime. It is more than 83% full right now with an inflow of 1/2 mio m3 /24hours....

On the other hand I am quite fed up and get depressed with daily rains und nearly no sunshine. The pool is again over the top full even when I emptied it yesterday by using the "waste" mode while cleaning, to get rid of all the muck at the bottom of it.

This morning's weather at 11:47 above. As you can see, the rain here has been almost continuous since midnight (red line at bottom graph) at almost 16 mm at a fairly constant 0.1-0.17 mm/min. This has resulted in depressed temperature (9.0°C) at the time, almost flatlining. However, wind has been slightly lower than my forecast anticipated (max gust 4.1 m/s, South), but is likely to pick up again shortly, as the rain eases off temporarily.

Being able to vac to waste without having to worry about dropping the water level too low is one of the two major benefits of all this rain for pool owners.
The second benefit is all the added rain will have well diluted any cyaneuric acid (stabiliser) remaining in your pool water.

Is it not removing some of the protection for the pool?

What am I missing ?.

As far as I am aware a high level of cyaneuric acid in the pool weakens the effect of the other chemicals such as chlorine have on the quality of the water. This under normal cirumstancess the acid level would increase 'naturally' over time and is the reason why pool operatives recommend changing pool water regularly. The present rain over a long period, necessitating regular backwashes dilutes the level of this acid. Of course, the rainfall may have other consequences such as changing the ph levels of the water in the pool.

Max, I share your sentiments, I am so fed up of the constant rain, as are all my cats!! House cats are ok, but the ferals I feed are in such a sorry state.

I think it's not only me that one of the reasons to live in Cyprus was to escape the horrible, cold and rainy weather in Bavaria and Switzerland which was only not bothering when you had to work in the office...Every time you planned something for the weekend you had to cancel, as it was pouring rain....

I came to be near our family, the weather was a bonus, not this winter though, cold and wet, local Cypriot radio said it was the coldest and wettest in 28 years, looks like being OK today Sunday.

I am so glad to read that this weather isn't normal for Cyprus over the winter, we moved over here at the end of September and I was excited to see what the typical winter was like, but it was a surprise to me that it was so cold, the house we are in just has a woodstove and I didn't realize having central heating in a house over here would be so important, we knew living in Tsada we would be a bit cooler but I think for next winter I need to be living in Paphos where it feels warmer, although hubby says because we don't know what a typical winter is like maybe we should give Tsada one more winter, it would be a shame to move as it is so pretty up here in the hills, thankfully we are renting so have options....but we are definitely a bit confused on what to do.

We have been here nearly 12 years and to us there isn't a typical winter unlike the summer which is hot and dry.

We have had many sunny days with bright blue skies in January and February. I was once badly sunburnt walking along the coastal path in January.

But this winter has been bad or good for the reservoirs.

As a general rule the higher up you live the colder it is. Tsada will be cold.

I would not like to be as High up as Tsada without some sort of Central heating.. Strangely here in Polemi it looks like we will have used less gas for the central heating over winter, than in Previous years..
At the moment we have used about €275 worth..

No wonder Trev, this winter was much more wet than cold higher up. Since 2012 I had 3 winter with frozen water barrels and a couple of days with about 5 cm of snow..., not so this year as the lowest temp was 6c.

Higher up, like Tsada or Koili it is average 8c cooler in winter than down at Paphos near the sea. But on the other hand there is much less humidity the rest of the year. Some of the views you can have up there you can't beat... sunrise, sunset, mountain view, sea view. I had several houses in the Paphos district, on the hills or down near the sea and must say that I prefer to live high up. Here one picture from Jan 2013 proving that it can look like Bavaria (but only for a few days/year) and a situation I hate, as I had so many hard winters in Germany in the past.

Sorry, Cheshire Lad, missed your query. As Varky said, the stabiliser builds up over time, hence the need to change some pool water on a regular basis.

The easiest way for me to explain it is ... chlorine is readily dissipated by the sun so manufacturers of pool chemicals mix it with stabiliser so the chlorine stays in the water, working away, for longer. However, over time, the stabiliser level builds up because chlorine (with its stabiliser) keeps being added to the water. After a while, a basic chlorine test will show plenty of chlorine in the water, but the chlorine is unable to work due to high levels of stabiliser - effectively, it is in a straight jacket!

As far as I know (and I am not a pool expert), the only effective method of removing surplus stabiliser is to ditch up to one third of the pool water and replace with fresh. Yes, you will have to add extra chemicals to the fresh water, but as this is normally carried out over the winter, not a problem as many pool owners use minimal chemicals during the winter anyway.

This was taken on Friday at Asprokremos recorded at 84% capacity, it looks to me that a couple of more metres is needed for it to overflow, today its 88%.

Yes a couple of metres is needed, but its a vast, huge, mega area and so not much chance of ti overflowing.

Latest figures from the Water Department showing that only 6 MCM are missing until the dam will overflow. As the daily inflow right now is about 0.8 MCM you can perhaps work out yourself when this will happen...By the way the highest levels of our dams is normally March/April not now in February
