Article: Modern Weather Forecasts Are Stunningly Accurate

Post by Devil »

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/arc ... ow/581605/,
"The polar vortex is just the latest example of how reliable five-day forecasts have become."

How much better? “A modern five-day forecast is as accurate as a one-day forecast was in 1980,” says a new paper, published last week in the journal Science ( http://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6425/342 )
Although this article is essentially related to the extreme cold in the USA, don't think that it is irrelevant for the rest of the world and especially Europe. The current snow in the UK is also related to the polar vortex that has slipped southwards. We, in Cyprus, have not experienced it - yet! We could have the edge of it hitting us about Wednesday, but mainly as a small drop of a couple of degrees or so and a bit of rain (snow/ice at altitude). http://weather.bnellis.eu/forecast/

Well, my forecast for Wednesday was correct, and that was from the previous Saturday.

The rain we had yesterday, from midnight to midnight, amounted to 65.3 mm, which is the highest one-day rainfall I've recorded since I started looking at the Cyprus weather, 16 years ago.

We'll still have sporadic showers, right through to Sunday, some possibly heavy
