The previous ferry service stopped in around 2000 I think due to reduced demand and high ticket price.
It's not a cheap run so there will have to be enough demand otherwise it will have to be subsidised and that may be against EU rules.

Cheers

If i'm not mistaken I read that it would cost around €150k just in fuel for the return journey so there would have to be sizeable repeat demand for such a service and am afraid that imo it won't happen without subsidies. Unfortunately if there wasn't demand in 2000, and flight prices have reduced since then, then I can't see it changing that much now. The main passengers it would really benefit are those with vehicles and is there really enough of them to warrant such a sizeable investment??

I've Island hopped several times and have mentioned Cyprus to many people who say they would visit if there was a ferry. A lot dont know who we are are where we are! However it's still quite a distance from where the nearest stop would be (Rhodes or Crete). The Greek Island visitors include those from countries that don't traditionally come to Cyprus such as the USA, Australia and many South American countries. I can only see the service being viable if it brought such tourists in large numbers as well as he RORO for European travellers.

It would be nice, but I dont think, it would be profitable for any one to start the service.

In the 18 or so years I visited Cyprus prior to moving here 13 years ago, I too island hopped and absolutely loved it, saw many Greek islands and the mainland which otherwise I wouldn't have had the opportunity to visit. I treasure them and sincerely hope that this facility could be up and running again, whilst wholly appreciating the problems and barriers to make it viable!

Fingers crossed!

I certainly agree that it would be great to have the connectivity however I think it will be the ticket price that will determine demand and that will have to be high given the distance, time & costs involved which will deter the casual tourist i'm afraid.

Still - this is Cyprus - so who knows :-)

I to have visited many of the Greek islands, the difference is the Islands depend on the ferry's for everything from food to fuel etc, and are part of Greece, and its more or less their train/ motorway network....
