Indeed. All that was missing was the Dambusters theme.

Although you say you've lived here a long time so you will have seen it many times I'm sure!! Oh and the dams don't 'burst' as such that'd be catastrophic they just overflow!
You are right, I have seen Argaka dam many times overflowing, but it was never that exiting for me to go just for that when it happened. As my house was only 1 km away from the dam I passed there often with the dog or for excursions in that valley. I remember one year when the fire service had to come to rescue two Cypriot youngsters with their cars, trying to cross the little river, which has got only water when the dam is overflowing... normally in January. That was really funny .....

I've just come across a video of Xyliatou dam (Nicosia district I think) overflowing. It looks stunning (more so that Asprokremos did when it overflowed). If you're interested and on Facebook, search for @DepartmentOfForests, at the moment it's at the top of the page.

If you scroll down a little they also have a video of the river raging under and around Kefalos bridge, pretty incredible.

I can imagine you must have been very worried by the fire a few years back if your house was so close to the argaka dam! It’s hard to imagine with the rains we are having now how dry it gets here in summer!

I'm planning a trip of the bridges to see them do their jobs properly. I keep trying to get to Roudia but get distracted on the way...

For anybody wanting to go and see Mavrokolympos dam overflowing, please be aware that the Water Authority has closed the road at the top of the hill where the barrier is. You can just see the spillway from there but if you want to go further then it will have to be on foot!

Yeah, frightening it was. I realized only later how close it actually was to my house and solar plant....if the fire came from the bottom of the house, in the river bed, than there was for sure no chance to protect it...

With the continued rains it is not looking good for the poor lady who is missing from Argaka.

The search is continued every day but no sign, how dreadful it must be for her family!

No, I wasn't there when it happened.
Just to show how beautiful it was before the fire.... all the trees on the left hand side of the valley are gone..
