Posting on Social Media
Posting on Social Media
Please bear in mind when you post here, and on social media in general, that a LOT of people read these forums. They may not post, but they do read. Some of them have lawyers.
I have found that when lawyers get involved, they don't go after me, the site owner, they go after the person making the post. So technically I have nothing to lose by letting people post whatever they want. But you have a lot to lose. If I tell the forum to keep to the facts, I am doing so not for my benefit, but for yours.
This message is nothing to do with the recent thread I have just moved to the pit. However, I feel it prudent to point this out.

Yes, many people think they can post comments on social media oblivious of the fact that they can be pursued through the courts.
Just wish people would be more courteous to other forum members in their discussions.

Re: Posting on Social Media
...and how do these "lawyers" find out who the poster is?
Most members use a pseudonym and email ads are not visible

Re: Posting on Social Media
Well, somebody like you would be fairly anonymous possibly. I don't think you are on Facebook etc, though I could be wrong. However, a lot of posters have multiple accounts on various platforms. It wouldn't take long to find out who was who, if you wanted to.
Plus, when the fan gets covered, the argument has usually started elsewhere, and is merely continuing here.
I've never given out any private information, nor have I been asked to.

Re: Posting on Social Media
A timely reminder. The plain fact is that everything you post on any social media or forum should be considered as visible to the public at large. Also, everything and anything you commit to electronic print (e.g. emails) is visible to the authorities. Furthermore, it isn't all that difficult to work through to the identities of posters. I was once identified through a post I had made two years previously.
I recall an instance when a comment was made on a forum (not this one) where a well known local organisation threatened to sue a forum member, and the forum, because of a comment they made in a post. The comment wasn't all that outrageous, so be warned.

I vaguely remember the instance, and I believe the said poster had to "cough up cash".

and the comment wasn't all that outrageous either.

Re: Posting on Social Media
I have been taken to court because of a comment I made on a Cyprus Forum. It puzzled me how they found out my full name and address.
So just be aware that it can easily happen to you..

Re: Posting on Social Media
A lot of people when posting on forums etc, should understand, that posting unfounded allegations about businesses, developers, people in authority even Joe public can get them into serious trouble if anyone should decide to sue. as for how do they know who posted, they could find out in minutes if it got to the legal stage,
Re: Posting on Social Media
Even when you post something that is true, it does not prevent someone taking you to court to challenge your statement..
