I wonder why instead of having ‘a campaign of the week’ every week, the police don’t watch out all the time for drunk/drugged drivers, those with no seatbelts on and those driving with a mobile clamped to their ear, plus those overtaking dangerously. If they did there might be less serious accidents causing fatalities ...
It might also help to alter driver behaviour too.

I don't disagree but this campaign is Europe wide and decreed by the EU according to the article so I guess Cyprus is making sure it complies!

They need to have the same as the UK automatic 12 month ban for drink driving.
And if they drive again during the ban they get 3 months jail + extra points on there licence.
They also need to speed up this process like have 1 judge a week dealing with these cases and you cases is done in a week.

WHL, plenty of banned drivers in the UK get jailed for driving whilst disqualified, just doesn't make the papers (Not usually newsworthy).
Paul and Lesley, quite often the UK Police and Court system fast tracked drink driving offences over the Christmas period and people arrested overnight for drink driving were kept in custody and dealt with in the morning, if bailed for whatever reason a condition of bail was that they were not allowed to drive.

The reason that the Police have week or monthly campaigns is that they get special funding and that the officers will be on overtime just doing whatever that campaign is, as opposed to normal duties.
Of course the Cypriot Police should do anti drink drive campaigns and should be encouraged by all in their efforts, however they also need to be very aware of drug driving offences as well.

Whilst it is a UK report I am sure that Cyprus is not far behind.

Whilst sat in a coffee shop in Geriskipou near to the road crossing my friend counted 40 drivers no seat belt with another 15 on mobile phones within 30 mins , easy pickings for the Police if they could be motivated to sit and set up a video camera to catch the culprits , using a mobile is just as dangerous as drink / drug driving

I agree, just walk along any traffic queue and it would keep the police busy..
