The Brexit Special
Re: The Brexit Special
Well. Apparently the text of a deal has been agreed by both sides. Now for tomorrow’s cabinet explosion.
Re: The Brexit Special
Brexit deal: EU says it ‘will retain all control’ under Theresa May’s agreement, leaked note shows
Brussels believes UK will also have to 'swallow' compromises for access to EU markets
This is from latest Independent newspaper headline....
Enough to rearm the brexit supporters in May’s cabinet - so no deal will be signed off today.... it’s heading for the precipice....

This article from the New Yorker IMHO really lays out the position on Brexit.

I have said before, that right-wing media has perpetrated the “bad EU” myth. Made up stories and has Britain always referrring to the EU as “them” rather than “us” - never wanting people to really feel a part of it - some examples;

Re: The Brexit Special
The mess that we are in over Brexit could possibly have been alleviated if, after the original Brexit referendum, a further 'referendum' had taken place with various options on Brexit to find out what the population really wanted, as opposed to an 'in or out' option. This way the infighting between the various factions, the ERG, the labour party, remainers etc. would be in less doubt as to what the populace really wanted. Of course, this means a bit of joined up thinking by politicians and that is where my suggestion falls down
Personally I would have voted for a limited Brexit. I have no problem with EU immigrants as, in the main, they pay their taxes and contribute to the UK economy. There are already mechanisms (Unused) that prevent misuse of social payments. I have no problem with a customs union as long as any duties/payments reflect trade between the EU and UK. I agree the UK should honour its commitments to the already agreed budgets (with a time limit).
Unfortunately our politicians have, generally, let us down.

Re: The Brexit Special
Varky —I think this is why a “people’s vote” as opposed to a another referendum has come from....
Nobody knew the full implications of the initial vote and only no do we even know some of it, 2 years on.... The. Irish way, of 2 referendums on each topic, would have solved the issue.,... We are, however, unable to easily do any of these things and parliament could be chaos next week.

Re: The Brexit Special
Jingward,
My vision of a second referendum would not be to revisit the in/out question, but to clarify what depth of 'out' the populace wanted. Lack of this information is fuelling unsubstantiated comments being made by various factions/groups/parties each purporting to represent the populace, which they obviously don't' They only represent their own ambitions.

Re: The Brexit Special
I agree that is has to show the options - but it has to also give people the chance to now abandon leaving the EU. The crap from some, about Democracy states we must leave because of a referendum result, is bollox. People voted blind (in the main) and based on lies and deceit and unclear facts. Now we know, do we still want to leave?Varky wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 3:44 pm Jingward,

Re: The Brexit Special
Quite frankly Jimgward you are wrong, there was a referendum and the people (that could be bothered to vote) voted leave and it was democratic! The choice now is how we leave ...............… oh and the "People voted blind" is an insult to their intelligence, all 17 million of them!

I didn't say all voted blind and democracy isn't a one-off event. We can all change our minds..
I have yet to hear any benefits of leaving. Here's your Friday challenge, Shane. Name 5 benefits!

Re: The Brexit Special
You quoted "people voted blind (in the main)", I never said that, you did or do you dispute that ………………… and as for changing our minds, how many times do we need to change "our minds" before it becomes acceptable? As for benefits, that's a pretty worn out argument. As I have said many times before I don't know what the situation will be in 5, 10, 25 or more years time, just as I don't know what the situation will be if we end up staying in the EU in that period, historians will determine whether the decisions made were good or bad? If you (and HiC) can predict the future for the UK then maybe your skills are wasted!

Be fair to Shane, ask him to name just one benefit which will come from Brexit as it stands.
This on a day when the Health Minister warns of this possible scenatio in the event of a No-Deal Brexit: https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-brit ... SKBN1O60MW
Mind you, I was warning of this scenario 6 months ago, but was dismissed at the time as a scaremongerer![]()

Shane. Your reply tonight makes no sense. I’ll leave you the benefit to rework
