https://www.gov.uk/how-sentences-are-worked-out

Offences under sections 1 and 9 of the Theft Act (Burglary) are punishable either on summary conviction or on indictment. The maximum sentence in a magistrates' court is 6 months imprisonment.

Most cases in the papers recently in the UK are between £100 - £250 Fine or 12 – 18 month Community Service or in the worst cases Both a Fine and community service and normally all now have to pay a Victim surcharge of £50.

The worst thing is these days when you ring the Police to report a burglary they ask you – Has anyone been hurt – What is the damage on entry – What is the approx value of items taken – Then they give you a crime reference number for your insurance company and they tell you to contact your insurance company and that is it – If you want to have a police officer come out to see you , Then you have to make an appointment for them to come normally two days after the offence – I speak as someone who has had first hand experience of this recently and also two of my not immediate neighbours.

If they got the max six month sentence they would be out after 3 months anyway.

Which proves that prison doesn't rehabilitate the offender(s), what it does teach them is to be better at crime and not get caught!

What it does do is it gives the public a short break from the offender.
