While those look far better than the Spanish style grills - It concerns me that the downstairs becomes a prison in a fire. Can you get a panic release on them?

Also, my downstairs (and upstairs) is mainly sliding patio doors fitted with security devices.... so I cannot really shutter or bar.... People break-in when they know there are tourists who have left to go to the beach or restaurant.

The main point of having and using both good locks, shutters and wrought iron window grilles, plus a monitored alarm is that to anyone looking in from the outside there is no quick and easy entry to the house. Many would be burglars will pass it by and go for a house with none of these extra deterrents down the street. At least that seems to be the usual picture in the area where we live.
I have grilles on all downstairs windows which don’t have shutters, as they are on the ground floor and there are plenty of french windows personally I have never worried about the grilles in the event of fire. The houses here are mainly built of concete, steel and glass and there is much less timber than in most English homes. If worried you could install fire extinguishers..

Always commented on the"Home in the Sun" programs that showed a lot of properties with bars on the windows, especially Spain and hardly any in Cyprus, such a shame it has come to this.

But surely on Patio doors the burglar just had to throw a rock through the glass..

Whole heartedly agree with what HiC said above.

Thoroughly recommend Stuart Porter, excellent work at a sensible price and the Yale locks have prevented our patio doors from being 'lifted' to gain access. Also fitted by Marinos, another top guy.

Trev it's true. One of the biggest burglaries we had to attend to, as the owner was in Nicosia when the alarm went off, had exactly that happen. The patio door was simply smashed. The patio locks were useless and the alarm was going still by the time we got there. The police told us - if they want to get, they will get in. Obviously only grills might have avoided that but they would have to be everywhere as many times, the entry points are the upper floors as was my neighbour's last week. I agree with Dee, the more obvious the precautions taken, the more chance of deterring the opportunist or passing burglar.

I have attended at quite a few break ins (not in Cyprus) where the burglar has just smashed the glass in a patio door.. Safety glass just crumbles into small fragments..
