Paphos A&E Doctors to stop work for two hours every day

Doctors of the Paphos hospital’s accident and emergency department announced that from Thursday they would go on two-hour work stoppages every day to protest over understaffing.

The doctors announced that the work stoppages will be between 12.30pm and 2.30pm on weekdays and between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on weekends.

At the moment, there are 10 doctors at the A&E department, reports said, while the minimum number of physicians required to meet needs and ensure patient safety is 13.

Doctors told state broadcaster CyBC, that some of their colleagues are on prolonged sick leave but have not been replaced. They also said that they are forced to work for long periods of time without breaks and are not being paid for overtime.

They said the health ministry failed to respond to their repeated letters in which they refer the problems the department faces, including issues concerning equipment.

Not good but understandable. I am not sure what will happen in a life and death emergency.

Anyone who has recently had to use the Paphos General Hospital will know of problems of understaffing, it is not just A&E, something will have to be addressed before this really gets out of hand.

And on the plus side at Paphos General Hospital, there used to be two urologists, but now there are Three !!!

I wonder with the new Cyprus NHS starting next year , with more people paying money in will that address funding ?

Went to the General this morning to give blood for my 6 monthly prostate check up. Arrived at 07.00hrs. Plenty of parking spaces in car parks in front of entrance. Purchased money stickers. Noticed there was hardly a queue at the GP registration desks. Registered at laboratory registration - small queue. Had blood taken. Had flu jab.

Finished at 08.00hrs.

GP registration queue was now back to the sticker sales office. Parking full.

The withdrawal of the strike in the TAEP under two terms was announced by the representative of PASYKI, Dr. Adonis Eleftherios.

If the ministry publicly recognizes the existence of the problem and at the same time announces the intention to directly hire two doctors, the guild and doctors of the TAEP declare that they will lift their strike measures for 15 days said.


The meeting in the office of a director in the presence of a representative of the Minister of Health was completed shortly.

Sadly, the shortages of Doctors and their working conditions is also have a detrimental effect over in the UK.

Front page of the Mail in Scotland is about thousands of doctors leaving to work in Canada, US, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.

My local health centre now cant cope. They are back to receptionists triaging your need for an ‘emergency’ appointment. Only made by phone at 8am - and extremely difficult to get - otherwise A&E - so heading the same way as Cyprus.
