1,282 drivers booked for parking in spots reserved for disabled

Post by Paphos Life »

A total of 1,282 drivers were fined for parking in spots reserved for the disabled in the first nine months of the year, Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday. This is an improvement on corresponding figures for 2017 (1,914) and 2016 (2,761), but?? shows police and organised groups representing the disabled face an uphill task to persuade drivers to?? comply with the law....

This is a subject that affects me directly. What I have noticed is that where there are multiple parking slots for the disabled (e.g. Lidl), there are fewer illicit parkers than outside shops with just one slot. This may be a problem of visibility, combined with worn or doubtful signalisation. One way round this problem may be to always have two well labelled slots together.

What is the percentage of disabled badge holders in Cyprus?

What is the percentage of disabled parking spaces in a Cypriot shop/car park?

Quite often a café/shop will have 4/5/6 parking spaces outside their premises and one of those is marked disabled parking only.

Are the Cypriot disabled badges the same as the ones used in the UK?

Currently, private companies and organisations are prevented by law from clamping (which is why Hermes had to stop doing it at the airport). I believe the police could do it but don't have the equipment do it at the moment.

Then a change in the law is required, but knowing the Cypriot mentality regards their cars, it would be a brave man clamping it.

The last thing I would want to see in Cyprus is clamping or, more specifically, these clamping companies. Why can't shops and organisations just police this better themselves. It would take very little for Lidl to have a designated member of staff looking through the window or periodically checking that the cars are badge holders. Then shame them over the tannoy if they miss one.

Our car was checked by the police in the AlphaMega /McDonalds car park between Limassol and Larnaka. We were having a coffee. I went over to the police and they wanted to know where the disabled person was.

Pity they don't police the AlphaMega carpark in Paphos as one idiot regularly manages to take up the two spaces by parking diagonally and does not display a badge.

No, the design is different but they are interchangeable in both countries.

Did you get booked or did you have a disabled badge that you were not displaying ??

Trev, I am a law abiding citizen, most of the time. Only been summoned once to appear in court. The disabled person was with us and she just waved her stick at the police from the outside seating area at McDonalds.

We were displaying a UK disabled badge with the correct time set. They were checking it and one of the police got on his radio, which was why I went over to them.

Must admit, I find the Alpha Mega in Paphos very good and I go twice a week with a disabled person! All the disabled bays are blocked with bollards and you have to beckon the attendant over to get in one!

Thanks for the clarification John :-)
Shane, yes I agree with you the parking is usually quite well organised at Alpha Mega.. There are disabled spaces on the upper levels I believe ..

Shane, I was referring to the disabled parking bays on the first floor of the car park, next to the lifts. The ones downstairs are well policed by the staff.

I've seen pictures of cars on 'Parking like a **** in Cyprus' parked across 2 disabled bays at AM its usually the same blue Merc.
I haven't personally seen that particular car but have seen another, it was a small 2 door Suzuki.
