Electric Bike Specialist

Post by hutch642 »

Hopefully this is the right place for my question. My wife brought an electric bike over with her about a year ago. At first it was fine but when we returned 5 months later the battery would not charge anymore. Probably our fault for not arranging a charge once a month. It seems impossible to get the same battery now as I think the company Bionx either went bust or stopped making them. I have checked google and eBay many times. As the rest of the bike is fine I was wondering if there are technical electric bike shops that could somehow convert the whole battery system. I have googled and there does not seem to be any. We have used E bikes in Paphos but I think they are more sales/rentals than technicians. Thanks for any suggestions

Although there are centres that rent out Electric bikes, they also have to have them repaired.
Is it not worth contacting Cyprus E Bikes to ask there advice..

Thanks for the reply Trev. We have rented from the shop 3 times and they are real nice people so I will pop in to see them to see if they know anyone. If we can’t get it sorted we will probably end up buying a new bike off them anyway

I’m not the most practical person so that looks way to technical for me. I’ve found a place in Nicosia who say they may be able to do something. Bit of a trek to take it there but it may be worth it. Thanks for your help

I am a member of a Pedelec Forum. There is someone called Jimmy who recells e bike batteries and seems to be highly recommended. However he is based in the UK. Sorry, cannot help for someone in Cyprus but bike shops might know of someone. Try the two shops in the old town, opposite the Esso station. One of them does have electric bikes for sale occasionally and also the one you mentioned.

Here is a link to the Pedelec forum and the post about Jimmy. You could also do your own search on that forum.

Thanks for the link John. I will email him. It would mean taking the battery home with us and bringing it back and it’s probably about 5kg so will take a lot of our allowance. I will see what he says

I would make sure that you can actually carry the battery on the airline you are flying with before thinking of taking one on a flight. Check the airlines conditions of carriage.

Have you thought of just trying a local electronics repair shop, especially if someone could recommend. A few years ago my neighbour in CY, who is now deceased - so I cannot ask him, had a circuit board for his cars electric windows/locking repaired, looking at this if you can do that, this looks relatively easy. I have replaced soldered in cells in things like razors, telephones etc and I learned to solder at school. The most they can say is no.

Getting the battery back to the UK might be a problem. I know Royal Mail will not deliver electric bike batteries. I am sure someone on the Pedelec forum could answer your question or suggest the best course of action.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I found a bike shop not far from Kennedy Square on the Polis road. He seems to specialize in electric bike conversions. He did a couple of tests and thinks it may be the charger but he’s not 100% sure. I have to go back at 1200 tomorrow to get the news. If the battery is dead he will have to do a conversion
